First Time Incubating. *Pics*

I have read that anything over 98* F and anything under 102* F you should be ok but I do my best keep it 99* to 100* F. I had bad luck with the high humidity...had gooey chicks when they hatched and low hatch rates.

Then I think I'll take my humidity down to 40-45% or so. I live a fair bit above sea level, so I know it needs to be a bit higher here.

And thank you for the reassurance on the temp.

Oh My Gosh!

I candled again *smacks hand, bad Colourful* I know I should open the incubator as little as possible...

But anyway! I Candled again, just a few eggs, and I have at least 1 fertile Golden Sebright! I'm absolutely ecstatic!!! Here's an Australorp egg I took a photo of. My Sebright wasn't showing properly through the camera.

Okay. My last candling picture until it's time for me to candle the lot, promise.

I can't wait to see all these chicks! And then see them again in 6 months when they're big and wondering free range too.

Lacey; that's a good idea, doing just a few at first. When did you put them in?

I got eager and candled my Light Sussex egg, just to see if I could see the dot yet.

No dot or veins quite yet. I can see where the yolk is, and I was careful not to keep the egg out for long.

But here is a cool picture of the veins in my hand, lol.

The egg is slightly porous, is that right for Light Sussex eggs? Or an I worrying over nothing?

Lol just some mutts the father is a SLW the mothers' are a black sex-link and a 1/2 SLW 1/2 Red Sex-link sooo yeah mutty of a mutts

Pure bred chooks are good and I endorse them.

But Mutt chooks can be so beautiful! And there is always a surprise in what will come out of the egg, I love the colour variations that you find in cross-bred chooks. I've got a rooster who is the best one I've ever come across (he's go good with the hens) and I'm not sure what he is, but he is a mutt.

I love my rooster and my Isa Browns.

I hope the incubation goes well, and we can see what hatched.

Well my humidity keeps getting closer to 40% so i'm changing out a vent to drop it down closer to 30%. I should have put a smaller water glass in there but was lazy and felt like hey i won't have. fill it as much.

I'm to new at hatching. Just bought this used homemade incubator. Then I built the brooder next to it.

I was trying to show the eggs in here. But mostly got the thermometer. LOL. Set 20 RIR eggs from my hens yesterday. Have 5 Pekin duck eggs on top. Just for the heck of it.

Temp holds very well. I was more concerned about the humidity. Was at 52%. But after some advice on here lowered it by covering the tray with foil. Now at 45%. Somebody sent me this link. You should read it if it is your first time incubating. VERY helpful!! https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/151741/ventilation-is-the-key-not-humidity

That was a very good thread to read, thank you for showing me! I know I have to remember to pull my vent plugs when I do lock-down! No-one let me forget either, please please please.

Your incubator looks great, I look forward to candling time.

Your brooder looks good too... but maybe a little short at the sides? Maybe it's just the angle I'm looking from, but I know I'd worry about jumpers.

That said, I'm trying for Sebrights in my mix, not ducklings and RIR. I'm probably just worrying you for nothing XP

How many days is it for Pekin ducks to hatch?
