Hello all! I got my first pig today and I thought I would ask all of you some stuff. First off I'm going to show this pig, it's a 15 week old gilt, and I know some people use whips and some use pipes for training/showing, what do you use and why? What brand of food would be best for her? Any good treats you suggest? And if you have any other knowledge or tips I would love to hear them!

Whips? Pipes? Good grief!! As a youth my husband was in FFA for many years. All he used was a hog cane. You can find one at the livestock supply. Constact your local agricultural extension office or 4H. You ought to be able to find something on swine showmanship.

Hog cane should work pretty well. Get her used to you and being moved with one and she probably won't need much prodding. Pigs are very smart! Our guy was leash trained and he loved going for walks. It would not have been difficult to train him to walk with a cane for direction though!

Our pig loved just about anything you would give him. We used to collect just about any kitchen veggie scrap in a bowl and bring it out at feeding time. He also liked dandelions, but just about anything could become a treat for him!
