first time sick chickens

I want to add that the NPIP breeder who sold the rooster is in big trouble with the state (Indiana). I didn't hear the outcome of the story because it was a closed group on FB, quoted to me by a friend who kept me apprised of the situation, but the selling breeder was reported as the source of the rooster and may lost her entire breeding flock as well. What she should have done when faced with ILT was, unfortunate as it may have been, cull her flocks, disinfect, let grounds and coops lay for months, and start over. Yes, a monetary loss, I'm sure, but the alternative was to cause pain to someone else just like she did. To me, not worth it, not at all.

Some may disagree with me on this (gee, that's never happened, right?) and I believe there is now a vaccine less likely to cause carriers of ILT, but it's not a guarantee. "Less likely" is definitely not worth the risk, in my book, not if you are disseminating birds all over the country.

We raise cattle, and years ago, when England got foot and mouth disease, I cried for those people. Culling is an effective disease control, but so heart breaking.
