Gigglebox- what breed is your hen? She's very pretty!
It's been dust bathing weather here too- very warm and dry... seeing the babies pick up the habit is hysterical!

Questions for the broody momma's...momma's! lol! Would it be possible for a hen to start molting while raising chicks? I've noticed an awful lot of Gesine's feathers in her little cage- granted the chicks have been climbing her and sliding down...but I didn't figure that would cause so much feather loss. Any ideas? She's been dusted for mice/lice most recently about two weeks ago at most.

OKAY- Gesine is such a good momma. It's been super awesome to watch her and the chicks. I'm starting to want to know if they are boys are girls....and they are barely two weeks old! They much such a mess in the garage though- I'm wondering the best way/time etc to move them into the big coop...with the big girls. I am NOT worried about them being to cold. It's dern near 80 here at night. I am worried about the other girls leaving them alone. I also wonder if mom would fly up to roost without her little nuggets. So yeah. Advice? They have daily contact with the flock for hours at a time- they are just sleeping in the garage, and they stay in there when I'm not home.

1st I need to say, my 3rd broody this year is hatching her eggs now!

My 1st broody of the year, moved herself and her 4 little ones in with the other Sumatra's when the chicks were 3 weeks and 3 days old. It's been in the 40's at night, 60 to 80 during the day, and they are fine. They still sleep under mama's wing, and she taught them to perch with her. They get up on the roost with her, and then tuck under her.

Well that's exciting!! You are a regular peep factory! How many eggs are hatching this time?

I'm glad to know that by this weekend, they can move into the big coop then. Sticking point. One of the chicks is a silkie...no WAY is she gunna make it up to the roost. Should I maybe put in a lower one for the new family? That would be easy enough.

I think that's a great idea

that would give mom and babies the chance to have their own little place to go to bed. Maybe it will cause less tension because the other ladies won't have to share their "bed" with the new babies. Of course you know how totally clueless I am so....

she started on 6, now has 10, so the incubator is on to pick up the slack when she decides she needs to take care of babies, and leave the eggs. A 2nd roost isn't a bad idea at all. My Sumatra chicks at 2.5 weeks old could get 7 feet in a tree. And a full grown Sumatra hen is only 3 to 3.5 lbs.... so you never know. But then as I always say, Sumatra's are not your average chickens

. And they are known to be the best flying chicken. Quite impressive actually....

Add the roost, and move them in. Mama will take good care of them.
