Hello everyone. I have had chickens since last March. I have three americanas. We just got 4 new black hatchlings. Not sure of the breed yet. Anyways I am excited to learn more about my chickens. I live in the middle of nevada. I moved here last febuary. My boyfriend has had chickens before but this is my first time. Our chickens are free range and they spend their nights in our tree about seven feet off the ground.

Welcome to BYC!

Be very careful not locking your chickens up at night. Lots of predators out there taking out chickens ever day. You might want to consider a coop for them to roost in at night.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Congratulations on your new chicks! A great place to check out is the Learning Center, lots of good articles on chicken raising. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center X2, a coop is a good idea to consider, sooner or later you will have predator problems with free range birds.

I've heard that you can make a very cost effective coop out of the free wooden pallets they have at the hardware store. I know there's loads of chicken coop plans on here too. I found mine on craigslist for $35 but it is fairly small at 3 x 4 feet so I am starting off with just a few birds.
