My children (AGE 14 & 8) are wanting to get an incubator and try hatching chicken eggs. are there any brands of incubators that's preferred? and what time of the year is best to do this?

I like the styrofoam hovabators.
It works out best to incubate in the spring(not too early) because when the chicks are about 4 or 5 weeks you will be very ready to get them out of your house into an outside brooder/pen.
It's also good at that time of year because by fall when the weather starts to get cold they will be feathered out and able to tolerate the cold.

I started out with a brinsea octagon 10 with turner and it worked fantastic and was small enough to not take up a giant area. I had many great hatches with it. I just recently bought the hova-bator 1588 and have my first clutch of eggs in it. I've heard good things about it and it seems really nice just a good deal bigger. How many eggs are you looking to hatch?

Forgot to answer your second question. You can hatch all year long but in early spring I would say is the best because you can let the little chicks outside at a younger age because the temps are warmer.
