First timer dummy question

I like the idea of putting in fake eggs because as we all know chickens will peck anything. If they determine that these brown or white things in the nest aren't food then you'll probably never have an egg eater.

I agree, dummy eggs are a good idea! Like training wheels for hens, go for it!

Goyo's Girl :

My hens are 20 weeks old today. So far no eggs, but I'm not concerned yet. Just wondering, should I place dummy eggs in the nest box to give them the idea of where to lay, or just wait and see where/when the lay and play it by ear?

Well, what a surprise...yesterday when I got home from work, I found our first egg ever! Laid by 20 week old White Leghorn, Penny. It's perfect in shape and shell hardness, but a little on the small side, which is normal, I've heard.

Love the ladder idea for the roost! I have one I can use...

CONGRATULATIONS! Whoever took the photograph caught your excitement and happiness perfectly!

Congrats on the new egg--now you've got to eat it
