Hello all,

My first question is: Is there a difference between the French and American standards?
Any tips or other responses will be greatly appreciated! :)

Why are you concerned if there is a difference between the French and American standards? If you are showing in the US, you show against the American standard. As far as your pictures, you can't tell much sbout the birds. Which state are you in? What line of Marans do you have? The guy that seems to be having the greatest success with Black Copper Marans, at least on the east coast, is not on here I don't think. I pay attention anytime I am around him though.

If you are in the US you should only be going by the US standard. Not the best pictures and I do not know much about Marans, but I feel the female could use more copper on the hackles.

@gojira -
I didn't think it mattered what standard you used... Although, I was reading and the American standard is very respectful of the French standard. I can take better pictures tomorrow, it's getting dark already. I love in Missouri and I can't recall the lines I have. The pullet and cockerel are from different lines.

She is still young- although according to @Chooks man she is faultless :)

How often do you show in the US? Which shows? How do your birds do? As far as this pullet, it is tough to know much from this picture. I can't see her tail.

here I ll go with you guys point by point .to high light all the quality this pullet posses .

1) great body type 10/10 . long ,thick
2) Body color , marking and type of plumage 8/10.pure black plumage .tight and free from any fluff . black under fluff ,nice coppery hackle but need more expression .
3) Head 10/10 little flat and little longer .true marans head .
4) eyes 10/10 bright orange.
5) Neck 10/10 thick and long ,arch well at the top ,where does meet the head .
6) Back 10/10 flat and long
7) wings 10/10 held well close to the body .
8) Chest 10/10 well deep .not flat ,neither sloppy .
9) feet 10/10 .well colored not too dark and well feathered .
10) Tail 10/10 .nice shape ,well formed at the base ,free from any cushioning or fluff.

98/100 .
the 2 points she lost are cause by the luck of the lush coppery hackle

I m not from the US .
I m a member of the French marans breeding Syndicat .So I know my marans very ,very ,very well and deed .

where you show is not important ,what important is who you are showing against and who is the Judge !!!!!!!!!!!

The difference between the US SOP and the French SOP is so small .
the tail is one of them . in the US they call for a short open structured tail
the Original French call for a thin ,short and closed
any way none of this tail type is a disqualify . just losing point by any standard .

I am sure the poster is happy that his bird can be shown in Australia. But, I think the poster lives in the US. It is too early to fully assess this pullet. At this point, the pullet looks narrow, and the tail looks narrow at the base. The tail looks to be carried low. You critiqued the tail, but one can't see the full tail. In the US, the back should be slightly tilted to the rear.

Marans are a French chooks breed and they have they proper original standard .
I grow up with a marans .not just from reading some body s standard .
been breeding marans chooks to the french standard with my mom in the 70/80th . so I know them more than you think .
we are talking about chooks not US and AUS

SEE YOU LATER .HAVE OTHER THINGS TO DO .
