FISH GUTS?

ONLY if the guts are FRESH

fish guts killed a bunch of dogs in my friend's neighborhood and it was a long slow death. it's been a while and i'll try to ask him the details of it, but i know they weren't fresh and it may have been a form of salmonella.

i think a good rule of thumb is to feed them things that you 'could' eat.

there is a difference between what you can eat and what you could eat and what you would eat

Feeding raw fish to dogs has an extra danger that I don't know if it would effect chickens. http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/clientED/salmon.aspx

Dogs
and cats are not sensitive to salmonella. It can happen but it takes a much higher level than for humans. There was a warning out awhile back of pig ears and some other animal parts used for dog treats causing salmonella infections in the humans handling the treats but there was never much on the pets getting sick. Also why dogs can go bury raw bones for days and then dig them up to eat and be just fine.

The risk of both bacteria like salmonella and parasites like in the salmon poisoning is also lessened a lot by freezing.

We feed the girls leftover smoked bluefish. The girls LOVE it, but whew does the coop smell the next morning!

I was just going to say the same thing. You can catch stripers, cut them open to gut and they will be filled with worms. I hear fresh water fish are even worse.

I wouldnt chance it myself.
