This is a closer look with my crappy cellphone. As you can see its a jungle and no algae.

Is that the betta habitat? It looks ideal for breeding, except when you go to net out the female *after spawning* and the male *after fry are free-swimming, the tightness may break up the bubble-nest. Shallow containers with no filtration work best for betta breeding, as the fry are sensitive to moving water for about 2 months.

Here is a 1 gallon crock on my desk next to a north window. Its 3 years old and in desperate need of thinning. No filter. No pump. No light. No heater. I've never cleaned the gravel. I fertilize once a week. I wipe the glass with a inside out sock maybe every 3-4 weeks. hake a cup or 2 of water out and replace it each week. Thin the plants 3-4 times a year. Feed the freshwater shrimp 2-3 times a week and have fun watching them everyday.

So if you have living plants, you don't need a filter? Wow! and you said that they are happier and have better color too. Were do you get it ? I am certainly going to put it in my tank. And are the brown striped fish tetras? sorry if that seems a like a dumb question, the only tetras I was familiar with were the neon tatras , and again, they were debating on whether or not they would do well in a 5 gallon on the aquarium websites. I am so happy a get a straight answer!

When you say 'not of the same breed', do you mean they're not both betta splendens, the domestic betta, or they're like crowntail and one's a half-moon or common? If they are both a type of splendens, they will breed.

I mean like my male is a double tail betta and my female is a veil tail. I already tried to breed them.

The FEMALE had eaten ALL of the males fins ! I am still wondering why he is still alive today. Even his pectoral fins had bites out of them!

Fish don't have breeds like chickens and dogs, true. Yes, the same species (splendens) breed together, but if they are in the same genus (Betta) they can also breed. Not to be rude. Just minimizing confusion.

Usually it's the male who gets aggressive, but I've dealt with all that...shy males, aggressive females. I always had no less than 10 bettas. When one spawn wouldn't spawn, I would recondition them and try different partners.

Labyrinth fish, like bettas, could live in that easy. Most other fish need filtration.

I can't get any more tanks for fish-- my bedroom will turn into an aquarium! Although that would be nice, I don't think my siblings would like it.

Tanks? I kept my bettas in glass mayonnaise jars. They breathe air, so little oxygen is needed. I just cleaned the jars once a week.

Oh really? So they can live in less than a gallon? Well then the owner at petco was obviously wrong! If you find non aggressive females, can you keep 4 or five of them in a gallon?

They can live in a wine glass, but I wouldn't recommend it. The females always fight at first, and every time you clean their water, but they usually work out their differences and settle down.
