Thank you all for your postings, I did not need to join to ask questions, as I was able to learn from your Q&A's and my past experiences. So its been a few months. Just thought I would share my setup.

We decided to get the chickens for eggs, bug/weed control, and I really wanted my 2 year old to have the experience and appreciation of where food comes from.


Here was Mar 9, 2014 the first day they were home from the feed store. I used compressed pine pellets for bedding, medicated chick starter (a sprinkle of DE) , water with a bit of ACV, and yes, that is a kiddie pool. Yes, they are in the living room...

My wife and kid were out of town for a work trip, so I made them this series of updates on their chickies.

Figured it may help somebody else to see the progress.


Here they are March 10 I gave them earth worms and they went nuts.

Here is the Coop. I finished it in early April. The frame is re-claimed pressure treated two by fours. The roof is plywood the whole top is vented. Vinyl coated welded wire. All the fasteners are outdoor deck screws. the whole thing got 2 coats primer, 2 coats fence paint, and 2 hard coats shellack. (its humid here next to the swamp/river. The bottom foot print is twelve by 6 feet. The frame will not rest on the ground, it will rest on 10in "hardie board" siding

I had been introducing them to VICIOUS ATTACK PIT BULL by letting him stick his head above the brooder and sniff them. He definitely wanted to squeak those little squeaky toys. it took a bit of work, but by April 9, I was able to have him completely free no wire between them no leash. I did this for a few weeks, they were separated by a temporary fence, but I opened the gate while I was out side supervising.

Then I got to a point when I could leave the gate open while I was in the house and if he looked excited I would tap on the window or yell and that was all it took.

April 9 first totally free supervised introduction.

April 18, My little girl was back from a trip with mommy out of town, and we fed the chickies (kind of)
