Do It Yourself, Non Prescription Dewormer/Deworming

I'm confused because there's two places in your information talking about the safeguard dosage. One says give them the 0.23 one time and then 10 days later another. Then another one says give them the point .23 for 5 days. I'm confused..
The once and then 10 days later dosage will only treat roundworms. So, if you are CERTAIN it is roundworms, then that dosing should work.

The 5 days in a row dosage covers more types of worms. That's why the 5 day dosing for SafeGuard is often suggested. When one isn't sure what type of worm they are dealing with, the 5 day dosage will work for nearly all types of poultry worms (with the exception of tapeworm, I believe).

Has anyone treated with Ivermectin pour on? Drops on the back of the chicken's neck?

I've read that Fenbendazole should not be given during a molt, as it can interfere with feather growth. I have seen roundworms in poop three times in the past two months. Not on consecutive days; widely spaced out. Most of my chickens are molting.

I would have better luck dosing my chickens with
a) something in their water, or
b) something I could drip on their necks.

Trying to get something in their beak via syringe was a disaster when I tried it. I have to be able to do this alone; I don't have an assistant.

Poultry DVM says Ivermectin is effective for many species of poultry worms. I think you just have to be REALLY careful with dosing as it can be quite toxic to chickens (the dose is 0.2 - 0.4 mg/kg)

So, 4lb chicken is about 2kg (so you'd want 0.4 - 0.8 mg for that bird) and the Ivermectin Pour-On is 5mg/mL.

0.1mL is 0.5mg of Ivermectin (that's about 2-3 drops)

I believe I read somewhere in all these worm threads, I think it was @dawg53 ,said Ivermectin did not seem to work well for worming (but now I'm not certain - it may have been that it didn't work well for external parasites...)

Most Use Safeguard Liquid Goat Dewormer/Safeguard Equine Paste which can be found at TSC. OR you can order Valbazen online.

To treat Roundworms Only - Safeguard dose is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once, then repeated in 10 days.

To treat most worms that poultry can have except for Tapeworm -
Safeguard dose is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once a day for 5 days in a row.
---OR---
Valbazen dose is 0.08ml per pound of weight given orally once, then repeated in 10 days.
Yes, there's 2 places talking about safeguard dosing.

IF ONLY Treating roundworms, you can give Safeguard at a rate of 0.23ml per pound of weight ONCE, then REPEAT in 10days. This is for ROUNDWORMS ONLY.

If you wish to treat other worms besides Roundworms, but not Tapeworms, give Safeguard for 5days in a row.

Replied to you on another thread...

If you are having a tough time with dosing them individually, you could put their dosing on a piece of bread or similar, just make sure the others don't snatch.

I've found that going out early while they are still roosting can be very helpful when dosing the flock. I preload syringes with the medication and have them ready. Take a bird from the roost, dose her, set her in the floor, grab another, repeat.

Ivermectin is not the most effective dewormer anymore, you can try, if you wish, but Albendazole (Valbazen) is very good and can be used during molt. Fenbendazole (Safeguard) is also very good, but you want to avoid it during molt.

Is there an egg withdrawal time?

Ivermectin has lost its effectiveness treating certain types of worms in poultry. It will still treat mites.
I dont recommend what Poultry DVM states. There's no doctor of veterinary medicine involved with the site.
