Fisher Cat in the neighborhood

ga*chick* :

I was wondering the same thing...what the heck is a fisher cat..

It's like a little wolverine with a little less bad attitude. Note, I didn't say no bad attitude, just a little less. They like chicken.

They are evil weasels on steriods

. I have lost a few cats to them and 2 years ago a fisher chased my neighbor to his house. For all those who want to know what they are... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher_(animal) educate yourself

If you have to ask they are probably not around your area.

We call em Fisher cats in New England. I'm not sure why we do. My DH said they are called Fishers elsewhere. You're from New England too, but not sure if they are called different in Mass.

I saw one here in MI over the winter. I saw it every morning at the same time, same corner. Nasty little buggers. They were reintroduced in New Hampshire like another poster said. It wasn't the smartest thing to do. They have become a huge problem in certain areas.

I am in NE and never head them called fisher cats... lol. Must be a very localized thing.

Fishers are either on or near being on the endangered list arent they? I thought they were having population trouble.

We had one near here a couple years ago and it actually made the evening news! lol.

I wouldnt mind losing chickens to one, thats a might purty majestic creature. Cool beans!

Yeah, I think it depends where you're at in New England. They were always called Fisher cats where I was. NH, VT, and RI.
They were reintroduced by the DNR to keep some other animal population under control. If memory serves me right...I think it was porcupines. Then the fisher cats became a problem again. My dad said they weren't on an endangered list that he could remember. He does remember them becoming a huge problem many years ago. As he put it...The DNR had an OOOPS, sorry we screwed up moment.
He also told me why some old folks call them fisher cats, but I can't remember the whole story. I'll call him later, and find out.

Yes they introduced them back here into oregon a couple years back to control the porcupine population...stupid governments. We have one coming and going here...until I catch it near my chickens.

Lol I have always heard them called Fishers, not Fisher Cats, so I agree it must just be a localized thing...But then again us Mainers have always been alittle different from everyone else
