I wonder if he possibly had a stroke from the stress of fighting and injury. That could cause a "wry neck" effect also.
I had a dog that happened to - all I know is I let her out one morning and noticed she was "twisted" she looked like she was walking uphill ,on one side of her body. It made her lean and stumble. Breeze was such a doll, she was still happy and wagging all the time even when she fell. I started putting a lead on her and getting her to walk with me in the yard. I figured when she stumbled on grass it wasn't as bad as falling on gravel. I don't know how many days or weeks it took but, she eventually got back to normal.
