Something got one of my bantam cockerels last night. I have a separate batchelor coop for my bantam cockerels. It tried to go under, but the welded wire stopped that from happening. Then apparently it got on the roof and got in from a small hole.

The coop wasn't completely finished, but we had to temporarily use doubled up chicken wire for the top. It's was either that or nothing until we could get some hardware cloth to put up, which is getting picked up tomorrow.

My phone is not wanting to work today, so I only managed to get one picture.

That's a part of gallon water for size.

There was another hole maybe an inch wide. The hole at the top was probably between 4 and 6 inches wide. It took one of my Red Pyle OEGB cockerels, not a particularly big loss but I'd rather not have anymore losses.

I also had a Bantam silkie in the coop, he is much bigger than the one that got taken and can't fly at all. He would seem like the better option than a small flighty OEGB. No one else was injured.

I didn't find a body just a few feathers trailing off. I live in Central Florida in the woods with water, swamp, surrounding most of the property and a large natural pond behind my house. So, plenty of water sorces around the property.

What could this predator be? I'll set up a trap tonight, any suggestions on what to put in it?

Im so sorry for your lose love.
Thats terrible.

Im not sure what it could have been and fingers crossed it doesn't come back :fl
I watched a documentary about trapping Raccoons once and the guy was using Cat food but that might lure them in if it is a Raccoon.
Can you see where its got up on the coop roof? Maybe put the trap there.

I figured it was probably a racoon or a opossum or something similar. What about my other coops? The one on the ground had welded wire at the bottom, dug about a foot down (like the coop that got attacked) and hardware cloth at the top. The other coop is up off the ground and also has hardware cloth at the top and bottom.

I know both coops are pretty safe, but I would like to put out some deterrents until I can catch whatever it is.

Has anyone tried any of this? I would think to stay away from the mothballs.

Since you didn’t find the body and something carried it off its very unlikely it’s a raccoon. Not always but most of the time raccoons will kill them and tear off pieces where they find them. Fox or bobcat is more likely.

Nope. Then your yard will smell like chickens and mothballs. Fox or whatever took your chicken can tell the difference and will still want the chicken.
