Flax seed

I have tons of flax seed from horse I no longer have and I was wondering if I could give my chickens some for a treat? I want to get rid of it and hate to throw it away, it's spendy! thanks

I read somewhere that if you feed too much flax seed, you might see a drop in egg production. I'm not sure if this is due to the high fiber content or certain compounds found in flax seed, so if you do feed them with it (which I do; I mix it in homemade scratch), it'd be safer to do it sparingly.

The Manitoba provincial agriculture agency has information & a formula that uses flax. It amounts to 10% of the formula.

I have no experience with flaxseed but have read that too much in a layer feed, will give eggs a "fishy" flavor.

I heard that adding flax seed to their feed would increase the amount of omega 3 in their eggs, but I was wondering how much to give them?
