Flea prevention?

My dog is allergic to Advantix!!! I was wondering what I could do for inside the house, as he is only allowed inside, on the sun room ONLY, and only on the very hot days! Maybe I'll tag team the buggers with DE and Borax!!! Great thread

YES.

Vacuum, spread a box of Borax around, and then DON'T vacuum for a while, at least several days, as long as you can stand. If your house is mostly carpeted, it will work wonders. It will work its way into the carpet base and stay there, and keep killing. Kills by scratching them so they dehydrate. Spread it UNDER the house as well -- a Dustin Mizer worked for me. For the yard, a gallon pump sprayer with Dawn dish detergent squirted in will kill them. You could also use this under the house, of course.

Treat in and under and around the house all at once, on the same day if you can, since they can jump so far. It won't be long before you see quite a difference. You will probably have to repeat the Dawn, of course.

There is also a product called Roach Prufe, I think, intended for roaches, that is nothing but Borax in a finer powder. Around her I buy it at Ace Hardware. It comes in a squeeze bottle that is great for squirting the stuff under refrigerators and similar places. I agree, get the Borax, in whichever form, into every nook and cranny, including places like under couch cushions and between mattresses and box springs.

You are also going to have to treat your animals when you do this, at least once, probably twice, to get the hatching eggs. You could try a bottle of Adams flea and tick spray instead of Advantix, costs $8 or $10 or so, though personally I would go with Advantix or Frontline for one round.

Our house was infested with fleas one time some years ago, and to this day, every flea in the county WILL find my son. Worked for us and has worked for him and his family. I also use Advantix on the animals, but not monthly, maybe 4 times a year seems to be plenty, once you get the population knocked down, and really I use it more for ticks than fleas. I love my vet but even he thinks you need expensive chemicals. Just not so.

If you don't attack all the areas at once, they will just move around.

Personally, I don't understand why Sergeant's or Hartz products are even still around. They don't work and can be harmful, IMHO..

I was under the impression that frontline plus, when used just for fleas was a THREE month preventative.

What I Do and recommend ( and you're not going to like it) is get the frontline plus - shop around online- I think I spent 300.00 this year ( for an entire 12 months for 6 dogs and 4 cats) on it.

THEN get two capstar tabs per dog ... when you SEE fleas use a capstar in between frontline treatments - check the label because I dont think it matters if you do those monthly.

I got my frontline in January... I still have 6 tubes left and I have had 6 dogs the whole time. I live in Georgia and have been horrified to find the fleas never die around here! Yet I dont see any... well I did today but I had not frontlined since January.

Only way to take care or fleas is to prevent reinfestation. If you want something that will take care of your problem and not break your wallet, a year supply of medicine can be obtained for less than $30.Same active ingredients as frontline but cost only a fraction of the price. Also used in the same method and will also work in your yard.Is this what you are looking for?

hunterjumper999 ,you will have to prevent reinfestation or you will always have problem with fleas.I have friends that live in Georgia that had a terrible problem with fleas until they starting using the product that I suggested to them problem solved and no more fleas. It can used in the kennels, yard, trees, shrubs and on the pets. Most local co op or farm supply stores carries it so does Lowes and Walmart.

Bayer Tree and Shrub Insect Control Or if you can't find that use Dominion Tree and Shrub Insect Control.Cost less than $30 a Quart here ($ 16.50).For same dogs use 2cc between the shoulders blades just like any other flea medicine.Larger dogs use 4 cc.You can also spray the yard and kennel with this.Make sure you let the dry before returning your pet. This will not only kill fleas but prevent them from coming back.

Thanks! Hubby said hes seen the Bayer stuff at Lowes..is it a powder or liquid? THanks so much! sorry for all the questions..
