Flea prevention?

If you don't have a tick problem, you can get Advantage for a lot less, and the trick is to get the extra large breed size, and split a tube for smaller dogs. It kills them and stops the life cycle- nothing has ever worked as well for us.

Also, it's safe for cats, so you can buy the 6 pack, this will usually get you a 7th tube for free from your vet, and cover all of your dogs and cats- just be sure to look online to find out how much to put on each animal to split the tubes.

...a vet suggested this, so I'm not making it all up...

I bought a huge bottle of equine-strength pyrethin spray with citronella for $6 from TSC and I must admit, it worked immediately! They still aren't scratching.

They also didn't freak as much as when I put the Adams Flea Spray on them. Maybe it's not as cold on their skin?

I try to avoid insecticides since all the ones I found kill up to 100 diverse species. The lack of honeybees is disturbing to me as it is, so I'm not trying to contribute to it.

I used DE for years and have 4 cats and a dog.. maybe see 4 fleas a year IF THAT.
We also spray Petsave antifreeze mixed with Boric acid under the house, around the house etc.It will kill rooaches, fleas, and termites.
My cats dont get anything on their coats as we dont see fleas on them. My dog gets a tick once in a while but no chemicals on the dog either.

Weused to spend 1000 $ a year on 4 cats and a dog on wormer, flea stuff etc years ago. Not anymore. I refuse to nuke everything and put all the chemicals on my pets.( only get shots now and wormers anualy)
What we doing works for us but it might not work for you guys.

Also.. to mention..we live in a woodsy area. Surrounded by dense woods but have one acre cleared and all gras.

We went thru a extreme flea situation a few years back and we did the extreme fix.. lol
We replaced all carpet in house with Pergo Flooring. No more fleas in carpet or eggs hiding in carpet.
It had a major impact in our household .I know its not possible for everyone do to this but it helped SOOOO much .

I have 4 small Poodles that live inside, We had a terrible time with fleas on them. I was introduced to Comfortis, which is a once a month pill. That stuff is great so far, starts killing the fleas within 30 mins. Only problem is like everything else its not cheap either. Hope you get them under control soon, I know how frustrating it is to see your babies whining and scratching and not be able to get the bugs killed.

Well fleas suck and its tough to get them under control but a nonhazardous way to get rid of them in the house is to put table salt on your carpets over night and vaccuum the next morning. Its cheap and it is pretty efficient. Good luck. It also helps with ticks. You have to keep it under control to by using flea collars and baths.

COMFORTIS!!!!!!! I have 2 dogs that I just could not keep the fleas off! I tried flea dips, frontline, ect. The capstar work great for a few days. I decided to try the Comfortis on one dog to see if it would work and it has been a true blessing!!!! We live on 2 acres and it was not possible to flea treat it all. But, since we have been on Comfortis we do not have a flea problem. No fleas in the house and what gets on the dogs die within a few hours. I will not be wasting money on anything else and will continue to use the Comfortis only. It is a monthly pill you give them. WONDERFUL!!!

also, my house is TOTALLY hard wood and tile ( its why we bought it vs the BIGGER totally capeted house)

So ... Can I hot water/bleach mop the tile and mop the hardwood and take care of it that way?

Awhile back, I read here on BYC about Advantage being dangerous for cats. What's up with that?
Needing flea products for three critters, 1 dog and 2 cats, plus the possibility of another pup as soon as I can find one, I need to save $$ wherever I can. I don't want to save it at the expense of my pets health though.
