That's interesting....everything I've read says to use Sevin Dust for mite and lice control in chickens.....

Same here, but after doing some research I was a little surprised at what I found. Carbaryl (one of the ingredients of Seven Dust), a carbamate insecticide, exerts its toxic effect in animals by inhibiting the activity of neural acetylcholinesterase. It also has found to be the predominant metabolite in eggs after long term use in dosing or dusting around hens. I found this info interesting and it made me aware of the potential problems that we could face. Of course this is just me though.

Do they define what 'long term' use as?

I would think that if it's only used when needed, that it wouldn't be a long term thing, only a spot treatment thing.

I'm sure nothing is completely safe...

I'm using food grade DE around the yard, in our rabbits and chickens feed (2% or atleast my guestimation on 2 %), our dog gets a Tablespoon added to her kibble each evening and I've noticed a big drop in flies, ticks and fleas since I've been using it (almost 2 months).

I try to lightly dust the food grade DE around our general outdoor living area once a week (I use a hand-held flour sifter). If you have alot of rain, then you might need to dust more often. Same with the rabbit hutches & coop. We've been under a major drought this summer and luckily everything is dry, no matter what.

Serndipity...I don't think of food grade DE as being "hallowed", it's just another option that a number of us choose to use. I've been taking it internally and am feeling much better for it. I mix a teaspoon of food grade De with 8 ounces of yogurt in the evenings then follow that(the yogurt & DE) with 8 - 16 ounces of water, in the evenings. Definately keeps the pipes working smoothly!

Believe me, I'm not knocking the DE. I use it myself alot.

Our first response to anything wrong with the chickens is, "How about DE?"... The funny thing is that the stuff usually can solve the problem!

I hate to sound stupid but what is DE?

I have used the spot on products and they have not been working with my bichon, I don't know if it is her coats or she is just so extra tasty.

Hi all Just wanted to let you all know I took your advice and got the DE put it on all my animals for fleas and it isnt working they all still have them

To fight a flea problem like it sounds like you have, you'll probably have to lock up the chickens and really treat the yard with something. Treat the bedding of your pets and then the pets themselves. It really does no good to treat the pet when it just goes back in the yard and gets re infested.

I hope you can get it all figured out.

Good Luck...
