I believe the predator to have been a bob cat as I was told by neighbors a month or so ago they had seen one around.
Absolutely not. Bobkitties do not as a rule thrill kill as described. They like all felines may "play" with their food or kill when not hungry but never wantonly. Also they will not by choice leave an uncovered carcass.
Canines and bears are the most likely to thrill kill, defined as wholesale slaughter without the apparent need to feed, with mustelids being next most likely.
