Flock block... Waste of money

I got a Purina Flock Block ( 12"x12"x12") from a local feed store and hung a feeder lid a few inches over it so they wouldn't get on top of it. It lasted a pretty good while. I had a coupon so it only cost $5. it was normally $12. I sat it on a wooden base to keep it off the floor.

Was this the first time that your neighbors chickens have ever had one? My chicken "studied" theres for a good long time before they took the dive. LOL Pretty sure it was The Rooster (Zeus) that took the first peck after that they were on it quick! Should have seen the first time mine saw an earth worm it was funny, you'd have though the thing grew teeth and attacked them. Now not even a big snake phases them they all gang up on it , Maul it to death and then eat it. Everybody's happy (but the snake) !

Mine love it, I have made a device to hold it. Heres what I did : I took a piece of plywood and cut two squares 16x16 ( ok they where precut for another nest box...but i needed it

) then took a piece of 2x4 the height of the flock block and put one on each side of the flock block then screwed two screws into each "leg" on the side of the flock block to the top and bottom of a piece of plywood. so its got a base and a roof. I keep all my feed bags b/c I like to reuse stuff, and cut a square of it and stapled it to the top of the top of the flock block holder. so if they did poo on the top it didn't get on the wood and could be wiped off or let in the rain to be washed off....so far its working like a charm.

I was at the feed store yesterday and saw that they had some in stock. They are called "The Amazing Uncle Jimmy's Pecker Recker." "A poultry product that helps reduce feather pecking." I gave it to my girls yesterday and they are pecking at it a little bit.

According to the ingredients label it contains: Corn, Wheat, Barley, Granite Grit, Crushed Oyster Shell, Alfalfa Pellets and what not.. Heres the website ifo you want more info... www.uncle-jimmys.com

My neighbor across the street bought a flock block from a local farm store. It looks more like a peanut butter cement block. Her flock hops up on it and poops instead of pecking/eating it.

Are there several brands of these blocks? Maybe she picked the wrong brand or are they all pretty much the same? I was hoping to pick one up soon.

I've made my own in the past, which they LOVE, but I can't get it very hard and the gobble it up immediately. I used gelitan to bind the ingredients together.
I get mine from Family home & farm it is the off brand and my girls see me coming with it they are pecking at it before I set it down. They LOVE IT!

I mix cornmeal, eggs and scratch to make my own. Cook at 350 degrees for 45 minutes makes hard and not crumble last 3 days for 6 chickens.

I drilled a hole thru the middle, then hung it from the rafters of the coop. They finally figured it out and it gave them something to do during the long winter where it was below zero and they didn't want to go outside. I will do it again next winter. (I did have to buy a super long drill bit to get thru the 12" )
