Flock feed

Any issue related to high protein feed would be a long term effect. Not short term. Depending on what literature you read, the studies indicate that the concern re: high protein diets and gout set the cut off point at 30%. Having worked in the medical arena for years, I now tend to think that where protein is concerned, moderation is my goal.

More and more poultry feeds, especially show feeds are going to a higher 20 to 26 percent protein ration with no side effects to the birds. I myself feed 22 percent feed to all my birds and they are very healthy.
Also keep in mind unless your birds are cooped up 100 percent of the time and they get 0 treats there going to depleat proteins.

As other posters have stated a lot depends on what else you give your birds. If you supply treats, then it makes sense to give them the higher protein feed. For the most part, my birds get fermented feed, plus what ever else they find on free range. You are going to run into widely varying opinions. I suggest you do some research, read some studies, and formulate your own opinions. For every opinion voiced on BYC, there are 3 other varied and dissenting opinions. Do the research, make your own informed decisions, and stand by your convictions, until your personal experience or research tells you to do otherwise.
