Flock/Life Journey's 2019

Not sure how I only just found this thread but it's amazing! My 2019 flock goals are raise a few layer chicks for profit and find everyone good homes, get a handle on the ridiculous winter egg production of our 6 vibrant hens(gave away multiple cartons of eggs in last few weeks and still buried under eggs!) And hope our flock escapes the summer illnesses we always end up whith due to dozens of migratory birds nesting and living on and around the property, plus rats.
Nice goals!

Yeah, he's a frizzled Bantam Cochin. The Fluff really makes him look bigger than he actually is!

Something inside his fluffy little head has snapped today. :hit As I've posted before, he's been the least cockerel-y cockerel I've had the honor of having. He's only crowed once, I've seen him try mounting a pullet once and in general has been really calm for a 5 month old cockerel.

I have the Bantam and the standard sized chickens in separate coops at night, but they are out together during the day. Mr.Fluffball stays with the standard pullets at night because they have way more room.

Everyone gets excited when let out in the morning, they jump and run and flap around. Once everyone calms down little fluffy dude decides to do something, something that I rather not have him do. First he's halfway trying to mount one of the Bantam girls.

Now, that doesn't particularly bother me, that's what cockerels do! If they get too rough or just stand on the girls back too long I just shoo them off. He then proceeded to attack the girls! Pecking them and chasing them, but not trying to mount them. :barnie

At this moment he's in the coop away from the girls. I don't really trust him enough right now not to injure the pullets. I'll wait and see if this is going to be a ongoing problem.

How have you guys handled a overzealous cockerel? I know he should calm down months down the road, but what do you do?

I've seen some people separate during this period, like a look but don't touch type situation. If he continues this behavior I might have to try this. He's a good looking cockerel and has been nice up until now.

I hope he gets it though his head this is not the behavior anyone wants from him. :fl
I forgot about the fluff aspect of cochins, Giant cochins are called giant but it's probably mostly their fluff! I had a silver penciled cochin that tried mounting his adoptive mom at around a month old. He still had most of his chick down. We eventually rehomed him.

I’m up to 5 babies now, all are doing pretty well!
Yay, Five!

I’ve noticed some of the other hens starting to pick on Luna, I’m unsure why. Maybe they’re reestablishing the pecking order.
I had to feed her away from the others today as they were chasing her away from the food.

I didn't know chickens re-established pecking orders although it makes sense when a chicken is added or omitted. Luna is the first partridge brahma I have seen. Were columbians in her recent ancestry?

Ohhh no love. Your welcome to post here anytime but im sure its not dead.
I just post here because its too hard to keep up on so many threads honey.
I agree, I saw this post because it popped up in my feed. I do love trecking in other parts of the forum from time to time and sometimes watch threads but I don't always get notifications for them then lose track of the ones I watch. :(

You have a beautiful family love. What a great photo! How was your Anniversary honey?
Thank you Krystal! My anniversary was great, it was a month ago and we went to my favourite vietnamese restaurant. I think WhoDatChick's anniversary is on the same day as my son's birthday. I get confused sometimes, I actually forgot your real name but now I do remember you said it was Krystal! Then someone quoted Myles and Kayla I've seen a lot of posts of for months so her name is easy to remember. KLIL is a cute nickname too, it would even fit me since my mom's name is Kim so when we visit people together sometimes they call her big kim and my little kim except there's already a well known little Kim in the world lol I will probably just stick to Kim, Kimmy, or Kimbo

Flock Update:
My ladies are having a treat today. A pulled apart wrap. They really liked it.

I have noticed the girls eat really well together now since the garbage guts Gin had been re-home.

Looks like Coco and Hazel have a little bond going on though. They are really cute together and have started laying in the same nesting box now. But they dont leave Almond out which is good.

Got 2 eggs today :celebrate
Im starting to get a lot now. Need to cook something. :drool

Couldn't Free Range yesterday. We went Fishing last night. Didn't catch anything but. Had to grocery shop this morning and it was soooo busy!!! Now im going to clean our house like the domestic goddess I am lol :gig:gig:gig

Ps. I miss you all when im offline. :love
Wow, that's nice of you to break up pieces of a wrap for your hens. My grandma will talk about how my uncle's then fiance would chop up carrots and other veggies for his nephew's pet rabbit. That rabbit lived soo long and all those veggies probably helped. I know too many veggies can give a rabbit diarrhea but it was nice of her to give supplemental treats to him.

Lol I wish I was a domestic goddess. I read that Nigella Lawson wrote a book on how to be one, I need to read it! I feel accomplished if I can complete 30 minutes of cleaning a day- most days I get too distracted and only get 20 done, or 5, or none!

Thought I would share my car since I spoke about having my nick name on my number plate.
It had been a wedding car this day.
And one of my proudest moments. Not my wedding but. Not married yet.

Nice car! It reminds me of my friend Lisa's. I miss her- we worked together in California then I moved to Canada and she moved to Oregon. We keep in touch. For our wedding I think we rented a Chrysler 300 or something like that. Apparently it was the car President Obama drove at some point. At present we drive a Toyota Corolla 2004. My husband wants to give it to my son for his 16th birthday. We don't drive it often but yeah I don't think it will last 15 years lol

Yeah we were going to go camping but instead my partner and I are just going to spend time together.
Sweet!

Gardening/planting Update:
Orange Habanero that we are growing!
Omg they look amazing!
I haven't tried them yet but Jordan ate one and said they weren't as hot as the White Jelly Bean Chilies the other night so thats cool.

Oooh. My husband bought jalapeno peppers, maybe we will have those tonight. I haven't had any in years and back then I would eat the cheese part and throw away the pepper. I might just try the jalapeno pepper and see if I can stomach it.

Gardening/planting Update:
Strawberries forming! :drool

:drool reminds me of when I gardened with my mom growing up, she grew tons of things but I was excited about the strawberries.

Got to use afew eggs and made Puff Pastry Mini Quiches.
I used Bacon but instead of Ham but still taste amazing.

Looks delicious! We also got quiche florentine on our last shopping trip. I like quiche lorraine too.

Welcome! I am Kim :) Sounds like a plan! I have heard rats can be reduced by using containers to cover up chicken feed but they probably eat many different things. I think one of my baby chicks was killed by a rat.

@KLIL currently we have 11 after we sold off one of our roos this morning to a starting farmer :) Our White black EE roo Blizzard, my NHR Dori, bantam Cochin Penny, her I-don't-remember what daughter Tater-tot, Wyandotte Lacey, buff orp lemon, 'Mr.' Tophat our main black polish hen who ended up growing spurs faster than our roo's. And our 4 younger top hat black polish who we collectively call 'the tophats'. well be getting some hatchery chicks next week and a clutch from the bator so numbers are about to pop greatly!
I will definitely have a chicken named tater tot one day! I love tater tots. Tater tot is one of my toddler's nick names also.

We have two acres but currently only enough coop room for about 25 standard adult birds in the main coop plus another 6 standard size in our tractor. I plan to sell of half our coming batch as chicks and 90 or so % of remaining chicks as large pullets. I can't get overly attached as we may end up moving this late summer, and I don't want to pay to import more than 6 or so chickens to another state and put undue stress on birds Im not completely committed to.

Lovely! 2 acres is all I need to have more than 3 chickens and roos would even be allowed. One day :bow

Free Range Update:
My girls got to free range this afternoon. I said to my partner I might go let them out so he went up and let them out and they were so happy daddy came and hung out with them.
We were both sitting with them. Hazel getting pats from Jordan of course. She loves him. And Coco was sitting on my knee for awhile.

Almond makes me laugh! She still runs like a dinosaur like 2 week old chickens do. Makes me laugh!

They got about an hour today. Would have liked more but my partners uncle had his dogs here letting them run around so didn't let the girls out encase.
Aww I love it when chickens remind me of dinosaurs.

BREAKING NEWS!!!!!
ITS RAINING HERE!!! A SOUND I HAVEN'T HEARD IN AWHILE!!!!

:wee
Lucky! We haven't had rain in months, just snow!

What's for dinner everyone?
We are having these bad boys for dinner! :drool Jordan's starting to cook now.

Lucky again! I forgot you are on a different time zone. Tonight we might have those jalapeno peppers. I am going to share the last of these durian treats with my little one since my husband doesn't like them. Durian is an acquired taste I think, they are popular in southeast asia.

As for the main course, we might have pizza or spaghetti.

Hi Everyone,
If anyone finds or thinks of any cool or effective coop ideas please tag me or let me know? Im starting to put together some idea's.
I saw this video once and was amazed!

Further to this I should tell you what I have so far.
  • I want cup drinking things connected to a tank that catches its own rain water for the chickens.
  • I want sand in their roosting area. Easy to clean up mess.
  • I want swings and stuff to play on (not sure of ideas of that yet if you see any).
  • I want well ventilated and big enough for 20 chickens and me to sit in there with them.
Those ideas sound great! :thumbsup

Sure! Still nursing #3 (or Bambi, but the name isn’t final yet) back to full-health :)

If I weren't a bit crunched for time I would try to think up some. Weekends are my hubby's time to use the desktop computer. I don't get as creative on my phone because the screen is so smashed from me letting my little one use it that it is kind of sad to look at haha. I'm sure others can come up with good names though! What a cutie!

Hello, I'm a little late in all of this, but I've read it.
You can call me Stick Chicken, and I've had poultry all my life. Currently I have approximately 36 chickens(10 bantam cochins, 8 d'uccles, 4 sultans, 1 silkie, 1 ayam cemani, 1 swedish flower hen, 1 new hampshire, and a bunch of mixes). I also have one call duck, four geese, and two guineas.
I also have five cats:
Sebastian-black and fluffy(he's the oldest by several years)
Ignotus-blue and white short-hair
Anders-a beige little cream puff(he is super fluffy)
Winchester-blue and white short-hair
Zelda- black and white tuxedo short-hair(the only she-cat)
Along with these, I have a red beta fish(Bloodterror) and a flock of sheep(I love the fact that chickens and sheep have flocks).
Here's Sebastian(sorry about junk in background, but he was smiling)

First day of Blizzards rule as coop king and he seems lost lol. Crowed a bit as always and danced for the girls, but seems confused as to how to convince our more skittish polish hens to associate and hang by the big girls without a secould helper to wrangle everyone together. Normally hed walk the polish to breakfast while Rudy bullied a spot for them at the feed. Theyre still pullets though so hopefully he'll fully wrangle their hearts and convince them to fully integrate in the next few weeks.

It should work out soon

Blizzy(my nickname for him) eventually gave up after I supplied the polish their own bowl and is now whith his 3 main girls Lacey, Lemon, and Top hat while Dori, Tater tot, and Penny keep and eye on the pullets. Oh and Lemon is already off the nest lol the Polish hassled her over the fresh bedding in her box till she leaped out to attack and they took it over for foraging purposes -_- I fixed it and put down more straw to distract them so hopefully she'll try again in the next few days.
