Flock/Life Journey's 2019

We have had very bad fires the past several years. Last Fall a fire in Paradise, a city a bit over an hour north of me, was leveled and 85 people were killed

You're in California, right? You guys seem to not get a break during the summer :( :fl Praying it's not so bad this year!! :hugs

They were pretty cold so let them heat up a bit and now started up incubator with them in so they can both warm up the rest of the way together. Have a couple disturbed air cells so to be safe i put them all in cartons to sit up right for now. Will not turn for 2 days and then will candle and see how we're doing.

This year was better-- we had a break in fires in dec. to March. Last year we had fires and danger all year long with no break.

The Paradise fire was in November

The flock is doing well aside from the always fluctuating number of broodies. :barnie Just when I think I'm about to knock the last one out, another pops out of nowhere!

I keep hearing that hens go broody often... I've had my sussex for several months now and notta! I'm kinda bummed... maybe when more start laying she might go broody?

Ah the Paradise fire..I have friends in Live Oak near Yuba City, they knew a lot of people who lost just about everything if they didn’t lose their lives. One of their nephews was a fire fighter in that fire, he was OK. I visited them last summer and was going to visit them when I was in California in March but I didn’t want them to have to worry about visitors that soon after, plus DS could barely stand being in the car an hour let alone the nearly 3 hours it would’ve taken us to drive up there from my mom’s. My friend who shares my birthday, as does her daughter, she said Paradise was a beautiful city.

Well anyway I went to the feed store to get more feed for my button quail including a protein substitute but they said I can just feed them duck starter which contains the 22% protein I needed for them. They said turkey starter is higher in protein but is medicated so they said best not to go with that so duck starter it is. For bedding they ran out of coarse pine so we ordered 3.6 cubic feet of fine pine shavings thinking it couldn’t be that big since it was only about $8. When we went to the back of the store to pick it up it was huge. Then I thought about how the button quail would have a problem breathing fine pine shavings especially for that long so we returned it. We still have a small bag of regular pine shavings at home. I found out aspen shavings is ok too just not cedar.
