It is almost identical to unmedicated chick starter if you read the label. That is the product I use especially when I am feeding different ages with chicks, adolescents, and roosters who don't need 3 times as much calcium as layer contains. The protein is 20% compared to 16% in layer. Extra protein is good if they are molting, or you have problems with feather-picking. Always have crushed oyster shell and crushed egg shells in a separate container so they take what they need.

@Eggcessive I have a dish of oyster shell at all times in the coop. I've been having some problems and wanted to get a higher protein feed, which is the reason I am temporarily experimenting with Flock Raiser instead of Layer Feed. Thanks @SunnySky and @casportpony

I feed my ducks flock raiser and eat their eggs with no issues. It'll be the same with your chickens. It just won't be as nutritionally balanced as a layer feed so supplement with extra calcium. The eggs are perfectly safe to eat.

Is it ok for a laying hen to eat flock raiser by Purina? Someone told me that it will make the eggs unedible. Here is the link to the feed http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/purinareg;-flock-raiserreg;-sunfreshreg;-recipe-crumble-50-lb

They lied, lol, it's perfectly fine to eat eggs from birds eating Flock Raiser, just do like the others suggested and supplement with free choice oyster shell.

Flock Raiser tends to sit on the shelf longer at the TSC in Gilroy, so check the date code on the bottom of the bag and don't buy it if it's been sitting too long. I accidently did that once and the bag was moldy!
