Flock Sheriff

I have a flock of 21 hens, 4 breeds. They are RIR, Rocks, Buff Comets, and Black Aussies. Seems that the flock sheriff is a black aussie. She will step between two squabblers and stretch to her full height and stick out her chest and just keep walking towards one of the two antagonists, bumping and forcing them backwards until they just turn and walk away. I have seen her do it 3 different times on 3 different days. Am wondering if any of you BYC'rs have had that happen?

Sounds like your Aussie felt the need to police the flock in the absence of a bonafide rooster.

She is stepping up and taking charge of the flock. It's not unusual at all- somebody has to be at the top of the pecking order!
