Flock size for small backyard

no, not incorrect at all. That is the general rule. I just wanted to hear from those with small flocks the pros/cons of going beyond that vs keeping to that...real life experience. My main goal is to ensure that we have a flock size that is right for us. btw thanks Elmo for reminding me about the abundance of eggs our girls are going to supply us! It really is awesome how just a few birds can keep a family in eggs! We plan to be generous egg givers of any surplus. : )

Boernechickens - I am glad to hear it! I am so grateful for these plans. I would love to see your coop. I will be posting pics at some point, too. This is the first real thing we've built, and I am sure to be proud of it!

We've had 10 birds in a 8x4 coop with a 8x10 run without problems but they are allowed to free range all day long in the backyard too. They were confined to the coop and run during a lot of the winter tho because they are not big fans of snow and it seemed like the ground was always covered in it.
