Flooring material and duck types

Finally got my camera and computer together to get some pictures :) So here are a couple of pictures of my ladies and one of the inside of the duck house after a night of letting them have water. The brown area in the far corner is all water. (duck house is not quite level).

Pretty ducks! But wow, what a mess! Have you considered a different style waterer like a poultry drinker with the lip around it to drink from? They make the most mess with a pan type waterer.

Lovely ducks!

I found that using a deep stock pot for water cut down 95% of the splash in the veranda. I was surprised that a deeper pot made that much difference.

I actually have a 3 gal. poultry drinker in the house but it didn't seem to make a difference. (I got lazy at using it. Was just easier to give them clean fresh water by rinsing out the pan every day.) I am planning on making that plastic bin cover idea for the winter time. :) The last two nights I have left the water out of the house. They get plenty during the day out of the pool, and I thought it made sense that they didn't need any at night. Put down some wood shavings and they were still nice and clean in the morning. Yeah!! I am already feeling less stressed about their floor situation.

We hung a plastic (kids sand bucket that comes with a shovel) from a bungy cord a few inches from the ground & our 2 girls dominate it! So we hung a plastic bucket (from ice cream we ate) on a bungy & they all love it!! They still have a fresh small bowl of water beside the food bowl, but this really has cut down on spills! & added some fun!

After reading on BYC where some duck owners are using Equine Pellets I decided to give it a try....I already tried the sand which I wasn't real happy with. So, I am using Equine Pellets on my coop floor for my three Welsh Harlequins three weeks old (plus four baby chicks)....am satisfied with it so far....no smell whatsoever....stir it daily and pick up pieces that don't disentergrate. It will break down into a powdery mix when it gets wet. Replace as needed. To control food and water messes inside the coop, I placed a plastic boot tray I got at Lowes under their food, and a black plastic dog kennel floor tray under the waterer that is rather large. Each time I fill feeders and the waterer I just rinse off the trays with a hose. After they all get large enough and have all their feathers, their food and water will be in the run and not in the coop. Then the coop will be a lot easier to keep clean. Good luck with your babies! I am so enjoying mine.
