Whats the best flooring to put baby chicks on? Wire paper sand or wood shavings?

I always used sand because it keeps the stink down and gives them something to scratch and play in.

shavings, for me they work better than sand. Plus you can add them to your compost later.

Ive been using shavings to but was told by an old chicken farmer that shavings is bad for chicks i just didn't know if that was true or not. Is there any specific type that i should use pine or cedar or does that matter.

use pine shavings...do NOT use cedar......its bad for chickens

What about mixing sand and shavings? I, currently have shavings but was considering adding a little sand. They root around so much in the shavings, I thought sand might give a little more dig.
