Thanks, but I did not think I knew what I was doing. I am a health care professional and I was thinking about exhaustion and hypothermia, so I tried to get her warm after floating in the cold pool water, and I tried to position her so she would not have to expend the energy to keep her head up. I thought her airway to breathe might be compromised when she let her neck hyper extend and it reminded me of the position many fossilized dinosaurs are found in, so I was terrified that she was dying.Man! How did you know what to do? I am still very new to raising chickens (just one month now) and found your story helpful. What does the 'bobble-head syndrome' mean in general? Is that a severe symptom of being too cold? Or taking in too much water? Lots of questions in my head from your story. Are you also watching for signs of respiratory problems that might take some time to really appear?
I ask only because you were so adept at caring & nurturing her back to perfect health. Thanks for your story!
Glad she is doing well. Did you put the new Australorp in once the others were roosting? I have a lone pullet that I will need to add and was wondering how to best do so. The last time I added new pullets it was brutal, but I did not try putting them in at night. Thanks, but I did not think I knew what I was doing. She continues to do well. She eats, hasn't missed a day of laying, and hangs with the other girls just like always.
We just added a black Australorp to our harem last night. She has been free ranging with the girls all morning and went back to the laying box a few minutes ago. Fits right in!
Yes, it was suggested to me to do so. I filled the feeder and the others had gone back to the coop and just as it got dark I put her in. I thought she may need a little light to find a roost. But My new girl is a hen about the same age as the others I already have. There weren't any issues this am when I gave them their table scraps snack either.Glad she is doing well. I'm in the Tampa/Plant City area and have um, lots of chickens, but I need more eggs. My kids eat a ton, like to hatch out chicks, and I have lots of friends that love my eggs. It's like a raffle picking who gets them when I have extras. Anyway, we have a wide assortment that free range: A RIR and a BR/Amauricana (sp?) cross rooster, and lots of hens: 2 Orphingtons (not so bright, but great layers), game hens, etc. We also have a few pet quality silkies. I'd like to find a few more hens from a trusted source that are good layers. I can buy or trade for fertile duck or chicken eggs, or for some of our chicks.
We should have 4 silkies in 2 weeks and a mix of hens in 3 weeks, and possibly ducks in 4 weeks that an elementary school is hatching from our eggs. Anyone have some hens or have a good recommendation on someone that does? I won't do an auction or unknown source, so I'm a bit limited. If I can't find any I'll just keep growing out ours and the chicks I swap with a friend for diversity. She has Heritage Turkeys, so if someone wanted some I could probably trade some of them too.

Pekin ducks. Right now just fertile eggs, but my daughter will probably start incubating them soon. They are her 4H show ducks, and her dairy goat mentor just offered her an incubator. I have plenty of hatching eggs, and a batch of 5 week old chicks, but I want some that are laying now. Yea, no patience here! I'm kicking myself for not buying a bunch of hens last fall. Our 4H leader sold all her hens for $6 each and I only bought 2. I should have bought 10. What was I thinking? Perhaps I was having a rational moment.I just got some Australorps a couple of weeks ago and they are great layers, but I don't have any hens to sell, only hatching eggs. What kind of ducks do you have?
