FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Only pet birds thus " song birds" no farm animals of any kind as they say. In my case the old people support me since they all had feathered friends as youngsters. In my area its the paranoid moms freaking that my pets will make her kids sick. But since my pets aren't sick I'm not sure how this could happen. My parrots are allowed as noisy as they can be but no chickens not even hens and quail are a gray area that I can't quite be sure.

I am overrun with roosters, black copper marans and wheaten marans mostly. If anyone is interested in a rooster please let me know.

I have more that i want to grow out so i need the space back..
I was in need of a Wheaten rooster a few months ago, .. but not anymore!
Good luck. - btw, I hear they're very tasty

I bit off the current topic, but I was wondering if anyone here in South Florida use the Deep Litter Method with any luck, and if so, what do you use as your bedding(I heard straw and hay mold easily...is this true?)? We just finished our coop this week and the poop is already piling up! I unfortunately (DLM speaking) spaced the floor boards(roughly an inch) in the coop so that I could hose it out so I'm not sure I could use anything without it falling through? We also have the coop raised in the run area so I don't know that I want to swoosh the poop into the run...speaking of the run, I was thinking about maybe sand? I NEED HELP! (I think I read too much:) Any advice on flooring would be GREATLY appreciated! Also a vote on whether or not I should paint the interior to make cleaning easier, and if so, with which type of paint would you use? Thanks in advance!! I LOVE the BYC community!

I was thinking of painting my interior too.I was just going to use low fume interior semi gloss or eggshell. But it would be interesting to see what others have done.

I sanded and painted my interior with leftover latex paint from my house. I think it's a satin/eggshell finish. I figure, if it's good enough for my kids, then it's good enough for my chickens :) I wanted to help protect the wood in the coop since most of it isn't pressure treated and make cleaning easier. I also laid vinyl flooring down in the bottom of the coop to make the cleaning out easier. I don't DLM, but I use dried grass clippings for bedding and just change them out every couple days. This might not be practical if you have a large flock, but I only have four hens.

Gotcha. I looked up the laws for keeping quail on the Florida Fish and Wildlife commission website, and they state for "game birds", button quail are considered pets as are peafowl and guineas, but all other quail esp. cortunix are considered "game fowl" and only 50 or less cortunix are allowed to be kept without a license for personal or commercial use. And within cities it would be a gray area unless specifically addressed in which case it would default to the county then state law.

I use the deep litter method in all of my coops. My coops do have wire under the roosts so the poop can fall to the ground when they are roosting and I can rake out under the roosts easy. I use a shop vac to vacuum out my coops when I change the litter which is about twice a year. The rest of the year I add litter (pine shavings) periodically to the coops. All but one of my coops are painted on the inside. I bought a 5 gallon bucket of exterior paint and used it inside and out of the coops. The brown paint was paint left over from the trim paint when we repainted out house and garage so I used it on the coops.

This is a picture of when we were building this coop.
