FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Hi everyone I am sad to say I had a fox attack last night lost one of my barred rock hen does anyone have any ideas on how I can solve this problem I am afraid the fox will be back tonight for some more food I would really appreciate any input I could get
I had a fox kill several of my birds. I finally took one of the dead birds and laid it out near the coops and set leg traps abound the body. The fox will be back for more. In total it killed 11 of my birds and I was tired of going out and finding dead birds. It would kill them and drag the dead bird out of the pen and then go back and kill another and drag it out. The next morning after putting the traps out the evening before, there was the fox caught in the traps. with a bird in it's mouth. I shot it and now it is in Fox heaven. I didn't catch it in my live trap. I had it out for several night. I hated to shoot it but I did check with our local wildlife and game office and they said they aren't endangered and since it was killing my birds I could kill it. The only problem with live trapping and relocating, I may be giving another chicken owner the same problem. One morning in my local donut shop, I overheard some fellows talking about someone was catching skunks somewhere else and releasing them in our area. At the time we had several skunks and one night it was quite late and I was very late putting some older chicks in their coop. Their pop door was partially shut so they couldn't get in. When I realized that I had forgotten to put them in I went out and there was a skunk digging under their run. I stomped my feet to scare off the skunk and it just looked at me and stomped it feet like to say "who do you think you are". I went in and got my gun and there it was still so I shot it. I also had live traps out and in one trap I caught 2 skunks. All total I caught 11 skunks.

I'm new to this site. From Florida. I have a question. A predator killed my only rooster 4 days ago. I still collected my daily eggs and put them in the fridge. This morning I got the idea that I'd like to incubate some eggs. Will any of the eggs the chickens lay today be fertile? It has been four days since the rooster was breeding them.
Also, he was a silver laced Wyandotte and the hens are Rhode Island Red

Sorry to hear of your loss. I'm pretty new to chicken keeping. I've never seen a skunk or fox in my area but will definitely be keeping my eyes open.

I hope you are able to catch the fox. Now for my latest, I'm after a coyote that has killed a rooster and 7 pullets from my Rose Comb RIW pen. These are show birds so I have been very upset about it. It had killed one bird last Saturday and fatally wounded another that died the next day. It was chasing a 3rd pullet outside my back door. I grabbed my gun and took a shot at it but I had bird shot in my riffle instead of buckshot as I had been after some gray squirrels that had gotten under the hood in the engine and chewed up his windshield wiper washer hoses. I put a dead bird out as bait and put both live traps and leg traps out. I think I may have hit it. I don't think I killed it but I'm pretty sure it has been licking it's wounds. It hasn't been back as far as I know. I have been shutting the birds in their coops at night and these raids on my birds have happened in the mornings after the sun has come up and I have let the birds out of their coops into their runs for the day between 6:30am and 7am every morning. The raids have been around 8am. I hope you get the fox. Good luck...

Thank cmom I have been upset all day I have live traps out trying to get him and if I do I will take pleasure in taking its life as it did to my hen I really appreciate the help and the ideas I just got home from work at 2:30 am and nothing yet in the trap and all my birds are fine maybe it might not come back today but I doubt it

It is very hard to get them in a live trap. Leg traps work best. Of course when you trap the predator in leg traps there is no way to get them out so the only alternative is to shoot them. I have caught most all of my predators in leg traps. I set the live traps out and mostly caught possums and skunks. I had a bobcat killing my birds. I eventually caught it in leg traps after it killed several birds. It came back for more. Now I have electric wire around all of my pens. The one pen I didn't have the electric around is the pen recently that a coyote killed several of my show birds, but now it has electric around it too. I think the coyote went over the top of the fence as I didn't find any place dug under the fence. All of my fences are 5ft high. Two of my coops are open on one side, I had an owl kill several birds out of those coops. I now have netting over the runs attached to the coop roofs. I hope you get the fox. The one I caught kept coming back. It may not be back tonight but probably tomorrow. I have video of the fox running my fence line. That is when I tried the live traps with no luck then put out the leg traps with one of the dead birds in the middle with the traps in a circle around the body. I have lost more birds to predators this year than many years combined. Good luck...

The two coops furthest back are the coops the owl was killing birds in. I put my game camera up and caught it on video.

This picture was taken before I put the netting up. I moved the birds from these coops into other coops as I was tired of them getting killed and burying them. I would have put some kind of front on these coops but they were DH's idea.

Completely random topic here, but for those of you who live In South Florida (Miami south), what areas are good to buy a house in? I want room for chickens and gardening. Not having to keep my chickens on the down low like many Miami residents have to would be great. I really like Redland and I like some parts of Homestead. My Fiance says Homestead is very dangerous, but I'd rather get the opinion from someone from that area.

Live Oak is a nice quiet town 1 hr from Jacksonville, Gains ville, Tallahassee, Valdasta GA
Reasonable property prices and we get a real season change.

I live in the Redlands, (between miami and homestead) a great place for chickens :), There are quite alot of good deals out here still if you are prepared to do a bit of renovation. I absolutely love it, and as far as dangerous.... well i have seen a whole lot less crime than i did in west kendall... where i lived for 16 yrs... i think i even saw more crime when i lived in pinecrest!

:) come on down we could use some more chicken people !!!

you could also try sending a PM to TREX..
