Hi, I just found this forum tonight. I live in Okeechobee, Fl. My husband built me a great chicken house and pens for my Marans, Buffs, Easter Eggers, and my sole Rhode Island Red Hen. I am new to chickens but not new to birds. Been raising Parrots for a LONG time. My feed store had some Maran hens about 10 weeks old, gave me a great price and now I am Chicken Caught. They are so much fun and each of mine has its own personality. I purchased the other hens shortly after at a young age and now all are laying. One hen turned out to be a Rooster. We call him Gigantor! He is beautiful and great with all the hens but the Rhode Island Red, which for some reason he hates. So we had to separate her. She lays daily in her pens and gets put up in the aviary at night. Spoiled Rotten. I am enjoying my chickens and want to add some Lavender and Blue Orpingtons. Hope to have some nice conversations with you all.

Question for my fellow Florida chicken folks:
How long does the molt season last in your experience?
A few of mine went into molt about 2 months ago and even though they're not shedding feathers anymore and most have grown back in, those ladies are still NOT laying! How long should I wait before I throw them in the deep fryer?
