FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

I have RIR, GLW & BO pullets that are 4 months old. Today I picked up 3 4wk old Auracauna pullets, and 3 straight run silkies. I don't even like silkies I don't know how I got suckered into that one. I hope they all turn out to be roos..... except for the funny buff one, lol.

Yup i'm up in the panhandle second county east of Alabama.

Hey Claudia! I live in Baker, so we must be neighbors of sorts! I've got two EE roos that I need to rehome if you're interested. They are about 4 months old. Feel free to PM me if you'd like more details. Welcome to the party :)

hahaha Thanks Joanne

The only reason I hope the two black silkies turn out to be Roos is that it gives me an excuse with the kids not to have to keep them. I don't care much for silkies but my friend made me believe i'd be doing her a great service to take them from her..... then I had buyers remorse. But I brought them home to crestview all the way from Nevarre and i'm worried it just means that many less chickens I can get later of the other ones I want.

I want a lavender Orp and a RLBW, and a Red Cochin frizzle, and a blue splash maran..... and ..... and.... and... and my husband wants one of each color orpington, cause he loves our orpington now. She's our biggest cuddler.

Do you want one of my 4 week old Auracanas? I was told they were "true auracanas" but I see feathers growing from their butts.... it'll help me make room for one of those ones I want. I suppose if it comes to it, i'll just take my "extras" to the Baker Farm Days next week.

My BCM's and also my Wheatens are going through the same thing, I have found to look for their combs to turn red again, I think it takes quite a while (several months) unfortunately. My BCM breeding roo twizzler started molting about 2 1/2 months ago and he has still not grown back the feathers, poor guy he looks like a shrimp version of his former self.

BTW: I am considering scrapping my Wheaten flock and starting over, they lay nice eggs and look great but they are making chicks with a BTB look to them and i feel like there was some mix up with the starter chicks i bought. I have switched to a different roo and will hatch one more batch just to make sure it wasn't the roo, and then if that doesn't work out i will start over... :(. I guess i could try separating them and marking individual matings but problem is if i move them the hens freak out and stop laying.. scrapping would be kind of a waste of my invested time but i need the space i have several up and coming birds that could really benefit from having their own breeding pen that the wheatens are now occupying...
We put a large dog cage inside the coop with food & water to separate 1 hen at a time. As soon as she lays an egg you can turn her loose and put in the next hen. No stress from separation or when returned to flock.

BTB ? wat's that?
also, you might be interested to know that I'm finding my Cottage Hills lay a slightly lighter egg than my Bev Davis ones. I have yet to see what the combination will make.

Yes. We have a general idea my hubby got from Grit Magazine, and he's going for a portable dome shape, about 12 feet long.  Four feet will be covered and inside and contain the nesting boxes, and 8 feet for being outside.  Made from pvc pipe so it will be lightweight and we can move it around the yard at will, but he has some tricks up his sleeve to keep out predators.  I'll post pics when it's done.

My husband created a mobile coop too but it ended up so heavy it is hard to move. I have two dogs that stay out 24/7 and they keep predators away plus our two acres are not wooded and that helps. We have not yet had a loss and the chickens free range all day. I know it's a matter of time but they are happier loose so I think it's a worthy risk.

They are Black Tailed Buffs, I have some black tailed buffs but i don't have a good enough rooster to breed them right now so they live in my layer pen. Problem is that not all BTB's apparently come out looking like BTB's i have some that look like wheatens, since this came about i have found that the roo i used has one or two caramel feathers on his legs as well as black, that is the only sign that he may not be wheaten, I think the single mating plan may be the only way to sort this out.

That's interesting about the cottage hills, I have not found same with my cottage hill black coppers (i have two hens and a roo from this line) they seem to lay darker eggs actually.

I would like to get a couple of dozen wheaten hatching eggs from Bev Davis but so far no luck, she never seems to have any, did yours come directly from her?

I have crossed lines with my BCM's so far i am losing egg color but since i'm in it for the long haul it should be fine, because i plan to line breed the offspring and should regain color in the next generation or two.. I have had just one pop out with white ear lobes though!! now how weird is that, i didn't see them until last weekend, i was so surprised!

I'm thinking ours is going to be too heavy too. We live in a subdivision, and our yard isn't fenced, so I'm not sure we can let ours free range, which is why he's making the run so large. We don't have any dogs (just 2 cats, who stay mostly indoors), and I know there are owls, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, and I once saw a bobcat or wildcat (not sure which, it was just a big cat in a tree at night and it scared the dog I had at the time, so I'm sure we are going to have some problems. I just hope not too many. :)
