I'm thinking ours is going to be too heavy too. We live in a subdivision, and our yard isn't fenced, so I'm not sure we can let ours free range, which is why he's making the run so large. We don't have any dogs (just 2 cats, who stay mostly indoors), and I know there are owls, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, and I once saw a bobcat or wildcat (not sure which, it was just a big cat in a tree at night and it scared the dog I had at the time, so I'm sure we are going to have some problems. I just hope not too many.![]()
Wonderful biased article in the Florida times union today about chicken owners. Titled "Urban hens often dumped when eggs stop" They spent half the article speaking with a vegan animal rights kook who advocates for a vegan diet. The other half displaying any downside they could find for owning a chicken, no matter most of that same stuff applies to any animal you keep on your property. I'm really disgusted by this article today.![]()
Some choice phrases from the article
"Aside from the eventual drying up of egg production feed shelter and vet bills add up
hmmm that's weird I haven't found a vet yet that treats chickens! and last I checked all those bills were mine not the communities
Another gem, chickens require secure housing...
Well Duh. So do dogs and cats and any other animal your keeping!
This is my favorite I think" Their feed attracts rodents"
Really? And wild bird seed left out in feeders for wild birds does not? I guess rats hate cat and dog food too right?
"Chickens can attract parasites"
Hello captain obvious...Dogs and cats do too.
Then as an aside he tosses in the old" plus there's always a chance that a baby chick turns out to be a rooster"
Well to that I say you can cut your chances by buying auto sexing or pre sexed birds from the hatcheries .
Really I can't believe that this article was on the front page, Ugh!! 1 little paragraph was spent talking to a chicken owner who loved her chickens and used them for eggs and eventually meat. The rest was a mishmash of negativity aimed squarely at the chicken keeping community.
yes thank you! With any animal there are rusks for parasites and pests but the benefits of homeraised food and goods out weigh it. I am starting to think that all this negative hype of rsising animals for food (eggs milk etc) is just propaganda to scare people into buying their "safe " foods. They dont want you to raise your own oh no they want to make as much money off us as possible and mass produce....this lady aint buyingYa know it's so stupid to me that people are so clueless about chickens and will buy into crap like this article... I get teased a little at work for being such a chicken lover... but today I mentioned.. ya know those eggs you buy in the store from the industrial type chicken farms? Guess what... those birds are stuffed in to small cages as many as they can fit per cage... they lay eggs that quite likely get pooped on and may sit in there with sick birds or dying birds... or dead birds... before they are collected... and of course they are washed thoroughly prior to packaging so they are date stamped and look perfect by the time you get them in the store.. but did you know eggs are porous and all the nasty bacteria that they wash off is likely to get into those eggs...so I hope you cook em really well before you eat them. I know my eggs are collected quickly after they are laid, I know what mine eat and that they are in good health and I would feel safer eating those from my backyard than store bought any day. I could so go on and on about the benefits of keeping chickens but I would be" preaching to the choir" here LOL! I find my cats dogs and bunnies require much more expense and effort daily than my chickens and cats dogs and other pets have the same ability to get mites fleas and ticks as any other animals kept in less than ideal conditions... or even ideal ones because the minute your kitty or pup goes outside they are exposed to all of those.
