FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Hi to all you Floridians! My name is Susan Rice and Hubby and I and our menangerie are moving to Riverview (Tampa area), Hillsborough County, at the end of next month. Unfortunately I will be rehoming my 25 pullets and their roo before our move as I have researched bringing poultry into the state and it is full of regulations. So short of sneaking them in I am finding them good homes and will be starting over when we get settled. There is already a run so we will be putting up a well ventilated coop for them and I probably will stay with about 12 layers this time.

Question, and I hope someone that lives near there can help me? I would love to start over with chicks but am not averse to getting already grown birds. Here in the frozen north (so. Illinois) the farm stores sell chicks in March/April. Is it the same down there? I wondered whether they had them different times of year because of the warmer weather. Are there any hatcheries within a couple of hours driving distance that I could go to , and then could order and actually pick up the chicks? I know I can always mail order them but having them sent this time of year I have to go with larger numbers than I actually want. I really want some more turkens--I have 2 now. A buff and a black and they are my favorites! I just wonder how easily I could get turken chicks locally. I am guessing it would be pretty difficult.

Anyway, any info you locals could give me would be much appreciated! It is 17 degrees here right now and I look so forward to getting into our new locale!

Thanks to JessNflock my girls have found a good home. Thank you for all the offers of home and thanks again jessie for taking them to a safe happy place.

Hi!

Is there a chicken swap or place to sell in Largo? Our friend is in St Pete and has a mess of show quality silkies - and we are trying to help them - I think even the sale in Largo might be easier for her - but I don't know anything about Eric's sale? (And they are closed on Sunday to call - ) Can you come later? He provides tables? Would people want $15 show quality chicks there - are is it more "pet" silkies?

Thanks for the feedback.

Hello Susan! I am a Floridian, but I'm up in the panhandle...almost southern Alabama. You may already know that GreenFire Farms is up near Tallahassee, which would be about 3.5 hours from you. Up here my feed store has chicks almost all year...not sure about in Tampa. I'm sure someone from the area you're moving to will be able to help more. Hope your move goes smoothly and Florida treats you all well! Welcome

Welcome Susan!!!! Eight Acres Farms near Gainseville sells breeder quality heritage breeds and colorful egg layers. No turkens though. She does sell pullets occasionally and chicks are straight run only. Her birds are beautiful and healthy.

There are plenty of breeders on Fl as an alternative to the hatcheries. You will get high quality birds.I saw a post from one in Gainesville. And ya can't go wrong with Greenfire Farms! Take it from one that took the long road with hatchery chicks. I'm into Cream Legabars.

Hubby needs space? Comprise? Doesn't he enjoy the fresh eggs? Make a couple killer quiches with lotsof butter and cheese.

They found a great home. But yes he need quail space and I am allergic to chicken eggs but not quail eggs and he prefers quail eggs so the compromise was to find them a better home before the law came knocking.

Hey there Susan -

We do pretty good with hens laying through the winter - and keep hatching because somebody near by always seems to want chicks.

We also have a good handle with the kinds of things you have to deal with health - wise in this area - so reach out whenever you'd like. Hope your move goes smooth.

:)
