It's great to see someone else in the area - I'm about an hour north of you in Martin County and work in both Okeechobee and in Palm Beach.
Chicken math is hard at work at my place. Started with an established flock of 19 from someone moving out of state then realized they were such a good deal since they were past their laying prime (but we still were getting 12-17 eggs a day during the summer), so I ordered 25 chicks from a hatchery. All but one are still alive and healthy at 4 months. Just sold 2 of the roosters and one hen, but my "significant" other accidentally sold one of my sweet little maran hens (I only had 2.). I'm currently at 37 hens and one young EE rooster. Twenty more chicks will be here in February, including a handful of marans. Demand for fresh eggs is really high around here. Even at $5 a dozen and doing no advertising, we have a waiting list.
