As I said, it was just a thought. I commend you on trying to find his owner and possibly keeping him. Many shelters will euthanize Pits just because of their reputations. Maybe he was dropped off. Tis a mystery. You just never know. People do all kinds of things sometimes with no thought, they just don't want a pet anymore. A friend told me about someone he knew that wanted to get rid of a rooster who liked to crow day and night, he just took him to a distant area and dropped him off. If I had know I would have taken him and tried to find him a home but it was quite awhile after he did it before I found out (word of mouth). People do that with many critters, they catch them and release them in other areas to be other peoples responsibility or their problem. I want to wish you good luck in whatever you decide.

The first anyone in my area knew about this guy, he was running for he was worth after a rental truck that was pulling a trailer. He couldn't run any more and that's when he walked up footsore and thirsty to DH at the mail box. Breaks my heart to think of him trying to catch that truck. No animal, not rooster, dog or anything, deserves to be dumped.

Thanks cmom, I'm about 98% sure we have a dog!

I can sympathize. Many many years ago I had a pickup with a camper and was coming back home after a trip to the keys. I drove pretty much straight through. I stopped to get gas before getting home and the back door of my camper was open and my dog was gone. I looked around calling her where I had stopped to get gas in case that was where she got out but I never did find her. I did place an ad in the paper but never heard anything. She had a collar but no ID tag on it. My dogs after that always had tags on their collars and were micro-chipped. Lesson learned the hard way. I figured it was a long shot finding her. I have no idea when she got out. This was back in the early 70's.

I wonder if the rental truck was someone moving that lived somewhere near your area.

Don't be so hard on the truck driver. My parents actually left my daughter at a rest stop in Tennessee, while on their way here to Florida. She couldn't catch their truck either.

If you're directing that to me, I think you may have misunderstood. If the dog got out during a stop or fell out without the driver's awareness, I feel for them losing their pet and that's why we're trying to find his owners. cmom related a story about a rooster being dumped and there is a possibility this dog was dumped too. It does happen, especially out here in the country. I was expressing my belief that any animal purposely dropped off to fend on it's own is wrong.

Sorry if that wasn't clear.

How long was it before they realized she wasn't in the vehicle?

Quote: An older couple at the rest stop saw what happened, and let my daughter use their cell phone. She called, but mom didn't recognize the number, so she wouldn't answer. Daughter called me. I called my mom. For whatever reason, my mother goes really stupid when there is a "situation". She argued with me that my daughter was in the back seat sleeping, and I was trying to play a prank on her that wouldn't work. She hung up on me. I called her back, and we argued for about 15 minutes, but mom refused to buy into my prank, and look in the back seat. Finally I screamed "you f....ing idiot, look in the back seat". It shocked her, because I never, ever cussed, or talked to her like that. You should have heard her then. Oh My God, turn around, we left our granddaughter at the rest stop. My dad drove to the next exit, which was a good ways away, turned around, and they went back to pick her up. Took about 50 minutes for them to get back to her. The couple never left her. They waited until my parents got there to pick her up. Later, I asked my mom if she could remember even 1 instance where I had played a prank like that on her. She agreed it was out of character for me, and I had never played that kind of a prank on her, but her mind simply refused to accept that they might have actually left my granddaughter.

Thank goodness for those people. It's nice to know there are still good people and that they stayed with your daughter. I think most people are good but every once in awhile you come across an a--hole. So glad everything turned out OK. I was curious. My husband and a friend almost left me behind once. We made a stop and they didn't know I had gotten out of the van and I didn't see them getting back in and they started taking off but I was much younger and a good runner and caught them when they stopped before they went back on the road and banged on the side of the van. We didn't have cell phones then and luckily it was in our own area and not on a road trip. My heart did skip a few beats when I saw the van pulling out.

Hello Everyone,

I am new to Backyard Chickens.

I live in the city (Hialeah) and starting to research about having 3 or 4 chickens only and at the same time looking for a good coop.

Any feedback/help would be great

PS.... Also, looking for a good place locally to get chicks for my coop.

Thanks,
Alex

First I would like to say
welcome-byc.gif
and the Florida thread. Some feed stores have chicks, you just have to check around. If you have a Tractor Supply Co. store they are getting ready for their chick days. Rural King has chicks year around. Of course these would all be hatchery chicks. If you have decided on a breed maybe there is a breeder in your area.

Go to the Learning Center here on BYC and they have a lot of information on raising chicks and coop designs. A couple of my coops were made from recycled materials. Some people buy play houses and covert them into coops. There are so many ways to build a coop. You could look on Craigslist too for a coop.

I would not suggest Craigslist for chicks but if you do, buyer beware. I do raise Heritage Pure Rhode Island Reds that I show at poultry shows and hatching gives me about 50/50 males/females so I do usually put an add on Craigslist advertising that I have young males for sale and what event I will be at to sell them, then if anyone is interested they can come to the event and look at them. You said you were looking for 3 or 4 birds. (chicks) so you won't need a coop right away but someplace to set up as a brooder. Personally I would get a half dozen chicks that way if you do loose any you will have a couple to spare and if you don't 6 is a good number and most places that sell chicks have a minimum purchase of 6 chicks. I Hope I helped you somewhat. Good luck and have fun with whatever you decide.
