FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Hello Everyone,

I am new to Backyard Chickens.

I live in the city (Hialeah) and starting to research about having 3 or 4 chickens only and at the same time looking for a good coop.

Any feedback/help would be great :)

PS.... Also, looking for a good place locally to get chicks for my coop.

Thanks,
Alex

Welcome! I have been a member for about a year and have spent all this time doing research. This is the best place for information that I have come across. I have my first batch of chicks (4 weeks old now) I went for 3...... Ended up with 8!! I agree with getting more than what you're looking for. All of mine are still healthy but I'm not allowed to have roosters and I thought for sure I would get at least three roosters out of the eight but it looks like only one is possible but everyone says it's too early to tell. I would say build your coop instead of ordering one. All the reviews say how flimsy they are. We are currently building a 4 x 6 that is very basic but will hold all of the chickens comfortably. The price is going to end up about $200 cheaper than if we ordered one.
There is a blogger called the chickenchick that has wonderful information about raising chicks to adulthood, building coops, the best litter to use and the best security for your coop. Her page and BYC are the only places that I looked to for answers now and several people I've talked to around here also use BYC for information. Good luck and have fun!

and the FL state thread!

x2 on cmom and poppycock1974 comments regarding where you can find chicks and building a coop. There's so much information available on BYC, it has answers to questions you don't even know to ask yet!

Make yourself at home, it's nice to have you here

Forgive me if I should post this in another section, but since it was Florida specific, I thought that perhaps I should ask here.

I have a couple questions about Florida NPIP

What is the cost?
Which diseases do they test for?
Are any other diseases able to be tested for at an additional charge?
What is the cost of VS 9-3 forms?
Can you explain the certification process for Florida?

Thanks :)

Ashlie

Morning and Welcome! I am brand new myself to both chickens and Florida!
I was looking for local chicks and found some at the Sparr building supply north of Anthony. Also thought about going to the Barberville Farm Swap Market this Saturday. I went to the Dunnellon one but sadly showed up around 2pm thinking it was open until 3 - Nope - 1pm. Oops.
And - I found a farm (via craiglist - EVERYBODY please chime in if you know anything about the place) Sunshine eggs and poultry? She's located in Paisley, Fl.
I also checked with Eight Acres in Gainesville and she is booking into April already!
Anyone have thoughts on these options? I already have three chicks - just looking for 3-4 more to round out the egg basket.

Thanks!

Thank you for your links, but i have already read through those pages and unless I missed something, they didn't answer my questions. I was looking for an answer from someone who has gone through the process specifically in Florida as each state is different. I understand that Pullorum-Typhoid are tested for but some states test for other diseases as well or give you the option to test for additional diseases. The costs also vary from state to state, some are free, some cost an arm and a leg. It is my understanding, which naturally could be incorrect, that Florida does not charge for NPIP but there are other costs involved, which they are however i do not know.

We took 2 of our black tail white japs to a show in Nov. and they did the NPIP test for free but im not sure how other areas are

Every show has testers and it's free but every show you attend you will have to have your birds tested. I have a tester come out to my house and test my flock every year for my NPIP certification.

I have not had any test done on my birds other than the required tests for my NPIP certification. If a bird does test positive then the whole flock must be destroyed as far as I know. My yearly is due next month so I will ask the tester that will come to test my birds about other test and the costs.
