FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Miami is probably more similar to New York City than Pensacola
in what sense? realty and taxes are much more expensive in NY, not saying its not expensive here, those of us that rather live a simpler country life this far South have to pay more for it, cost for farm products, feed, and such is pretty high here, I pay $37.00 for a 3 string bale of Alfalfa Hay and the Omolene 200 Equine Feed i use is $27.00 a 50lb bag, chicken feed I use is Kalmbach Henhouse Reserve Complete Feed, good feed, pricey though, lets compare Farrier fees, I shoe my horses every 6 weeks used to pay $135.00 per horse, now its more expensive (not competition horses) I have pleasure/trail riding horses, now i just trim the hooves and its still almost $100.00 per horse-every 6 weeks!, not complaining, not singing the blues, just saying....all in all its still a blessing that my family and I have the opportunity to enjoy living this life style even with its challenges. God is Good!

Hello, new to posting here but not new to lurking the forums.

Never owned chickens before my current flock and have gone seven years with them without any troubles until helene brought a couple inches of rain that flooded my pen. I've since been dealing with what seems to be tropical mites (fast moving, visible during day time), and while I've never seen them on my hens for certain, I've seen my smallest girl's eyes droop only when the mites have been around and crawling.

I have nothing against them, but I suspect the source is coming from my neighbors feeding and attracting the wild birds that carried these mites here. So controlling the source isn't possible, and I don't think I can keep up with managing these mites longterm. I'm in the jax area and have been trying to find rehoming options, sanctuaries, anything no-kill that would take four elder hens with better equipment to deal with this than I can.

Does anyone have any rehoming resources? Can anyone answer what I could expect if I reach out to animal protection? And lastly, has anyone else had this sudden mites experience since helene came through?

sorry to hear about your issues with mites, nasty critters, this far south we have intermittent issues with that, I keep the Permethrin that is labeled ok to use on poultry coops handy. use the food grade DE as a prophylaxis in the meantime. Hope it all works itself out for you!

To be honest, I was worried about using permethrin spray because of the two community cats (one soon to be adopted) that come around and like to sit near the pen enclosure and right at the front door. But I read more into cat owners' experiences here and elsewhere on how how much exposure would harm them, especially given they don't go into the pen or on the coop. At this rate, I'm buying it to double treat(one on one day, elector on the hens and premise the next to kill nits) alongside elector so the mites get wiped, and the chickens mite free so they can be rehomed.

The humidity here seems to really ruin the strength of food grade DE, unfortunately. The past week and some days has been full of only putting as much food as the hens are likely to eat in a day, seeing mites crawl through the food and DE at sundown, and tossing it all out to scrub down the food container. Same with water containers, dustpan, my boots. I love my hens dearly, but I will not miss being in the trenches of the bug war once they are safe and resettled.

Im not using the (powdered) Permethrin as much as you prolly think....there are cats, dogs, and pigeons around my runs and nothings happened to these the poultry or the outside critters, I even use it around the perimeter of my stalls and its not affected the horses. I am Truly sorry that you have this issue and have to rehome your chickens as a result.

I've heard that you'd have to be overdosing the liquid directly on a cat in most cases, too? Regardless, that's good to know and I think I'm at the end of this wave of mites right in time for double treating tomorrow. And thank you. I was struggling for a while with feeling like I'd failed them, but I know it's the right decision to make for their wellbeing. And my own, in regards to other health reasons.

Hi, Floridians! I was sent here from this thread. I'm looking to rehome four coturnix quail (three hens and a roo). I also have some feed, feeder, waterers, and grit to go with them. They're about 18 months old, and the location is in Broward County. I need to find another home for them by Saturday. I know it's short notice, but please DM me if you're interested.
