FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

You know, city hall by me can't even explain why they changed the law back in 2007 disallowing poultry. I've been told no one remembers or no one from then is still in office. WT? My birds are clean and happy and provide me with 3 dozen eggs a week! What family dog or cat can boast that?! (not against family pets, just sayin')

So.. did you say.."ok, well, what do we need to do to change it?" Did they say anything about that?

Of course! And I was told that it is a matter of procedure that will need to be followed. Need to find a commissioner sensitive to the cause and get their support. Need to have them draft a petition to amend the ordinance. Need to have the amendment considered in front board of all commissioners. Need to have public support turn out to show support for the measure, etc.

I am game to do this, though I know it may cost me my own flock. Something's just gotta be done. And I think that if many people who feel the same way are ready to come out of the wordwork and assemble their efforts in various areas throughout the state, we may gain some leverage for amending ignorant ordinances. I just need to see , who's with me?

There has been a big show of support for backyard chickens in Port St Lucie recently, and a group in Lake Worth (West Palm Beach) trying to change their ordinances too. They each have a Facebook page. You could try to ride on the wave they're creating.

One thing a wise chicken-keeper I know has recommended: make your emphasis on the keeping of chickens as PETS instead of livestock. There's still a stigma about keeping animals for food production, but people are allowed to keep other animals that are as loud and produce as much poop as chickens. Make the restrictions be based on noise & odor, as they are for other animals you're allowed to keep, and not on the species of bird. The rules should be the same for chickens as for an outdoor aviary of any other kind of pet bird. The tasty fresh eggs you get are just a bonus.

You don't even need to be in the same area as me. I think if these waves keep going statewide, maybe things will get moving for reals!

I'm not saying he's the right person to get involved...but the satellite beach commissioner bought a chicken coop from me....so the good people are out there! Keep hope!
