FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

oh my gosh this rain is insane. I have seen a lot of people losing chickens here and there....I have been pretty blessed so far. No power outage, but my septic is full so we are sleeping at my parents house. I want to let the chickies run around in the sun, but no telling how long it will last and I DON"T want to be chasing chickens in a storm.

On a sidenote, what are you all doing about the BUMPER crop of mosquitos that are about to hit us?

And of course the flies...dear GOD the flies will be horrible!

I use a fly trap from TSC. It's a jar that you hang and it comes with bait. When they bait quits working, dump it in a hole along with all the nasty, disgusting, maggoty flies and then put a banana peel in the trap. The flies love them. About the mosquitos, well, I live in the swamp, they're just part of the package. Limit outdoor activity around dusk and dawn if you can.

Thanks Maye, The reason I asked is cause I put up a bunch of tomatoes cause the rain was causing them to split. I have a closet turned into a pantry that has the cold air duct from the ac going though it with a ceramic tile floor. Coldest room in the house so to speak. I hope that's enough.

As a kid in my parents home growing up, we had a 100' X 200' garden that we canned and froze every year. The house was a 3 x 1.5 block ranch type with no a/c at all. The canned food kept just fine. This was in Lake County Fla. If you are really worried about it being cool enough, add a small 5000 btu A/C to one room that can be your food and supply storage room.

Here at the farm, I have a small 5000 btu unit in the spare bedroom that is my tack room for all my saddles. Half of the room is used for food and hurricane supply storage with heavy duty shelving units. Keeps my saddles in a good climate controlled room. A big plus to this is when the power goes out, with a generator I can still sleep in the cool.+++

When the last storms came and knocked out power in Mount Dora for over 2 weeks, we got one and popped it in a window. The generator ran it and the refrigerator along with one lamp. Living in the city we still has water and used gas for the waterheater. So other than being in one room we could still cook and have hot showers. BTW, the cable never did go out. So we just lived on one room for a few weeks. I was the only one in my unit at the hospital that was coming to work all showered and cleaned up. Everyone else was having to take showers at the hospital, some were bringing their family's to clean up because they had no power, no nothing.

To help out my neighbors I was cooking big dishes of easy meals. So everyone had somthing hot to eat. Had to put a dog kennel outside the back door attached to the house for the generator, so no one would steal it. We put one kennel inside a bigger kennel, the put one of my K-9 on patrol. No problems.

You shouldn't have any problems. I lived in a house without a/c for a few years, and as long as things were sealed well, they kept fine.

Yes, with the rain or after, will come the bugs aka mosquitos and flys. I already have a TON of flys in and around the coop. What do you all do about the flying insects? My girls aren't fast enough to catch them!

For mosquitos, like someone else mentioned, dumping all the standing water that you can. I'm also going to look into buying mosquito dunks for the pond. And insect repellent. I hate mosquitoes, they ruin all our outside fun.
And to combat them & the flies, Celtic Oaks gave me the idea of putting screen around my goose coop, which I think helps a LOT.

Guess I should by some benadryl/ anti-itching stuff for us humans just in case

As of this morning it looks like I'm going to come in at fifteen inches of rain even since Debbie started dumping on us late Saturday night. I think Micki up to Sugar Sand got even more. No flooding on the sand ridge, but some of the more interior counties are having real problems, notably Suwanee and Union. She's moving out into the Atlantic to become a fish storm now and we are glad to see the last of her!

Supposed to be fairly hot this weekend and with all the water on the ground that means it'll be so humid one could just about cut it.

You can use unflavored meat tenderizer and barely wet some in your palm. Rub it on the bite. It stops the itch and my grandkids like it because its not sticky and it works fast.
