FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

I was going to post this last night but my camera wouldn't cooperate.

My first Austrolope Egg.
Laid yesterday and they are only 20 wks. old. Didn't expect any until at least wk 24.

Orpington egg on the left for comparison. It sure is little.

The color is a bit off. The camera washes it out a bit.

I had no idea there were so many different types of chickens - and so many different types of eggs!! My experience with eggs has been limited to what we buy at the supermarket. Do all chicken eggs taste the same? Is there a breed of chicken that lays "better" eggs than all the rest? (I dont even know what would make them "better")

And what's the kind they sell in supermarkets (so I know what I'm eating, other than just "white eggs")

The white eggs you buy at the grocery store are Leghorn. If they are brown they are usually a production red which could be a number of breeds. All eggs pretty much taste the same. It depends on what the chicken eats. The better the feed the better the eggs. Letting them free range for plants and bugs also makes better tasting eggs.
edited to add. They are richer tasting.

Awww it looks like the eggs my d'uccle hen lays! She started laying at 5 months. She lays one everyday - she's 7mos now. I gave a bunch away to my family and when they asked about their small size I told them that they were low cholesterol eggs LOLOL.

Congrats!! You will be raising your own line this fall!! You need to post some pics of those cockerels too. Have they filled out yet?? ....stan

Yes this was one of Stan's chicks (not a chick anymore lol) but I'm not sure which one laid the egg. Had to hurry and put nest boxes in their stall. I figured the Leghorns would be the first to lay but I was wrong. LOL

Stan, They have filled out a lot, they are huge. Every day they get bigger and are the biggest I own. Question, I'm not sure what the SOP says on size but one roo is bigger that the others and thats the one I want to keep. He also has the best comb.

I would send that bigun' back to the breeder and demand he take him back!! Don't think anyone has been penalized for being too big. Glad to hear they are growing well. I might need to come get one. My picks don't seem to be turning out as well. ......stan
