FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Hi! I'm in Southwest Florida - Collier County. I am brand new to raising chickens.

Won't be long and you'll be an addict like the rest of us. It's very insidious. You may think you can resist, but basically, you're doomed!!

Jadnil, I hope Zoey is perking up. What a horrible situation!!

I am so sorry to hear that! What a mess. I'm sorry that your hubby doesn't feel your pain. I hope that Zoey gets better soon. And I'm very glad that you returned home before the situation worsened.

I would specifically train the 12 year old, I would not use the 'friend' again- I was doing that kind of pet sitting at that age, I worked cheaper then the adults too-

I am seeing several new chick people in southwest florida. Thats great! I am much more likely to be able to meet up in that area than most of the northern areas. Exciting! And looks like most of us in the south are new to chickens too! That'll give us plenty to do; the blind leading the blind. But it will be fun! Xoxo Annmarie

Update on Zoey...she is perking up but has most definately taken a few steps backwards . She had been making great improvements since her stroke/ Marricks, whatever she had, and now is back to where she was 3 months ago. sigh....her wings are still drooping and she has lost a lot of strength but she's a trooper and I know in time she will catch back up. Thanks for your sympathy and advice!

She sounds like a tough little girl. Lots of treats for her!

I have a question that has been running through my mind regarding swap meet ups. How do you all deal with biosecurity? I understand the quarantine period, but what about things like your car tires, shoes, clothing, and cages, etc. How do I go out to meet chicken peeps, or shop at feed stores, or visit friends' farms without bringing contaminates back to my chicks?

xoxo Annmarie

Bio-security is one of those things where the difference between "reasonable" and "extreme" is subject to debate.

My view on it is this. I don't let anyone touch my birds unless they have bought them. If they want to examine them I'll do the handling. If they insist on handling them themselves I'll give them some hand sanitizer first. I do the same thing if handling other people's birds. Moving from one person's birds to another's strikes me as a great way to communicate diseases.

I don't worry about my truck tires. I'd find it hard to believe that anything worrisome would survive the usually many miles trip back home on the outside of my tires.

Clothing is different however. If you've handled other folk's birds at the swap it wouldn't be a bad idea to change clothes before working with yours at home. I have to admit though I haven't done this myself.

I have been thinking lately of carrying some 2x2s to put on the ground under my cages to keep them out of direct contact with the dirt. Parking lots don't concern me much, but some places we set up have seen a lot of birds from previous swaps.
