FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Kim, Child Services down here has a terrible reputation, so your MIL may be in for a uphill battle. Since she has no money, she will be dependent on the state appointed attorney. Unless someone in your family has the money to hire an attorney for her. It will be very expensive, probably at least $20,000. It sounds like things are out of your control, so do what you can to support your MIL emotionally.

Pox is back here too.. wet variety this time. only one hen infected right now. My only olive egger :( Who near me has young/juvenile Marans and true-bred Olive Eggers (Marans x Ameracaunas). I need some color in my basket and thanks to my dog, cocci and now pox I am just.. ugh.. hopefully in 4-6 weeks everyone will be healthy and I can add a couple of girls

Just for the sake of curiosity why do you think that going to swaps are better than getting vaccinated chicks from a reputable hatchery?
The one I use is awesome and they do NOT cull any male chicks ever.
This may get some strong responses. I would not use a breeder or hatchery that did not cull chicks. Culling eliminates geneticly transferred problems. Vaccinations are good only if the entire flock is vaccinated, and vaccines are not available for some of the most lethal chicken illnesses.

I don't think going to swaps is better than a hatchery, and sometimes is even worse. There are bad breeders at swaps, just like there are bad hatcheries; however, you do get to meet the breeder, talk about their breeding program, and see the birds. Swaps are a great place to learn new skills, see new breeds, and make new chicken friends. If you want really good birds, the big hatcheries are not going to have them. The good birds are raised by skilled breeders who breed only the best birds in their flock. A hatchery could not do that and stay in business. Good breeders are in this for love, not profit.

Hope she makes it. It is so sad to watch them struggle with this stuff.

Just went through some pox here too. Looks like it's pretty much gone by now. The combs are looking more normal.
