That is funny! Mine haven't laid yet either and I consider them free loaders too.I got mine about the same time and the first batch of 5 hens, 4 blk ausralorp and 1 EE, layed for about 7 days and stopped then I got 4 more hens, 1 blk ausralorp and 3 wyandottes, someone didn't want and they layed for a couple of days then stopped, then I got a rooster an EE someone didn't want, he is very dominant male but nice to me. A couple of days ago I bought 2 more hens one a cuckoo maran and one an ameracaunas got one more egg and they stopped. I figure they just all have to get on the same cycle and I will be overwhelmed with eggs. Oh and then I also got a breeding pair of white silkies, thats how I know my rooster is a very dominant male, tried to put them in with the rest of my flock and I had to pull my EE off of the silkie and out of the pen and they now reside in my greenhouse till we can get other accomindations for them. Would love to go to the lake city show tomorrow maybe I can convince DH but doubt it cause he wants to see some more eggs before I get more chickens. Right now he's thinking about claiming them as dependents on the tax return.
LOL, Not sure if they will be 'super' or not, depends on how good of layers the Spanish and EEs are. The white egg later will lighten the color of the egg, if the pullets carry the blue egg gene. Not a certainty from an EE. Keep the pullets with a pea comb and I am pretty sure they will be colored layers. ....stanOkay "experts", I just hatched two chicks from an EE hen that lays blue eggs and a WFBS rooster--the breed lays white eggs. What color eggs might I expect in 6 months or so? (if they're pullets, that is... )![]()
You don't need to heat the coops at all. just keep them dry, and block the wind, they will be fine. Even if you lived in Maine, really.....Feathers are great insulators. Ever slept under a feather quilt??? LOLCentral - Spring Hill
How should i be heating our coop on the mights that freeze? Red heat bulb does not work. Freaks the girls out
I'll try to answer in order.....New additions never get along, but they will work it out, just give them time and enough room so they can stay away from each other and a new pecking order will be established.......Pullets are females that are not yet a year old. Less than a year old=pullets, males are cockerels, over a year old hens and cocks, ......At a few weeks old, cockerels will start to deve;ope combs and wattles. they will redden and they will soon start to grow pointed hackle feathers on the neck and saddle feathers just in front of the tail. Most cockerels will have thicker legs. Some breeds, you just can't tell before they crow., and I have heard of the occasional pullet crowing!.........Yes, you need a rooster to produce fertile eggs, just like you need a male to produce fertile eggs in any living being. They will produce eggs that are not fertile with out a male though.....Candleing is how you see an egg developing, it takes 21 dats for complete development and hatch here is a link that will show you what to look for. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...g-candling-pics-progression-though-incubation Have fun with your chickens and never appoligise for asking questions!! No one knows it all, even if they think they do......stanHello all. Im Elaine, and I have been reading all this great info from everyone but I have some silly questions... I have chickens and built two huge coops, Ive had new additions that didnt get along with the original 5. I absolutely love my chickens. LOL I am new to raising chickens and I find pleasure because each has their own personalities, its funny. LOL This website is great for newbies like myself. Reading all the chicken talk, I get lost.. what are pullets? Im not sure if I have roosters in the 4 chickens someone recently given me... what are things you look to tell if they are male or female? and do I need a rooster for eggs that produce chicks? and how do you know if an egg has a chick inside, Ive got the light but I dont know what Im looking for. I know these are silly questions, I have done alot of research and read magazines before I began all this but I would rather speak with people and get different views. I appreciate any advise. Thanks :]]
