FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Welcome to the Florida forum!  Nice people on this site you will enjoy.  What do you raise?  We are in Okeechobee where tonight and tomorrow night it is suppose to freeze!!  Florida, always a challenge.

We're New owners, or future New owners. My father had been talking about getting chickens for years, but didn't know anything about them. He grew up on local eggs, but never raised them. Finally he cleared a patch of garden to build a coop, and I've just taken off with research and drawing up coop plans. He wants some new Hampshire reds, and mom wants delewares. I want Ameracuanas, but since dad wants large brown eggs to sell, not sure what we're going to get lol. Mom wants friendly beautiful chickens with pink eggs. Dad wants big Brown eggs and lots of them. And I want a colorful eggs from a pure breed that is social with interesting genetics and heritage lol. We can't get them all, but most important is to find breeds that do well in Florida heat, can tolerate a large enclosed run, are social, and give 4-5 eggs a week.

I'm personally a big genetics nut, and I love the history of domesticated breeds, and would prefer a breed that fits a standard incase I get into breeding and showing. But baby steps first!

It's great to see someone else in the area - I'm about an hour north of you in Martin County and work in both Okeechobee and in Palm Beach.

Wouldn't it be great to get together a Chicken Swap for those who are down south living near the Big O? All the swaps in central Florida are too far from us The folks at Okeechobee Feed on 70 (near W&W Lumber in Okeechobee) have mentioned to me that they open to the idea.

Just a reminder for the Crystal River Mall Farm Swap this Saturday, January 25th 2014. Hope to see you there!!!

The Crystal River swap was a good swap for us, although I doubt we will be going this weekend. On the one hand, I have two peahens and some Brahmas I'd like to rehome. On the other hand, it's too darned cold to be outside all morning! Maybe next time.

For Central Florida folks there is an auction every other Saturday at the Sanford Flea Market. It's called Izzy Critters Auctions. A lot of it is regulars, so if you've never been it really is a buyers market. There's supplies, livestock, hatching eggs, eating eggs, and whatever else people decide to buy.
