FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome! Is there anyone here who keeps barred rocks? Pros and cons specifically in Fl?

We have 3 Barred Plymouth Rocks in our mixed flock. Ours have been good steady producers of brown eggs and are in the middle of the pecking order. They are usually the first to spot food (crickets, small toads, etc.) while out free ranging but then they'll run around announcing their treat to everyone so it turns into a big game of chase. One of the 3 is the biggest chicken we have but a sweetheart, not much for sitting on laps but likes to chat & get petted. They have done well dealing with our hotter and colder months.

Here's a picture of one of ours (a couple months ago):

HI! Welcome to BYC!

I have 3 Barred Rock hens and they are great. If there is a con to these girls it may be that they are a little picky when it comes to treats. They love crickets and leaves and bread, but on any given day they might reject almost anything else. That might just be my girls. They have so many pros though. They are pretty, smart, curious, and fun to watch. They lay nice light brown eggs almost every day and they forage so well that they don't need much store bought food. They are not afraid of people or pets and will come when you call them. They don't mind being petted or held, but sometimes they prefer not to be. They do really well in the summer as long as they have some shade but they love to sprawl in the sun. They also don't mind the rain. My opinion is that Barred Rocks are wonderful chickens and they do well in Florida.

I am in Central fl, just south ocala by 20 min

We have a couple of farm swaps monthly and could use more vendors/sellers. Also if there are some young people in 4H or FFA this could be a good place to do fundraisers for your groups. Contact information is on the bottom of the flyers below.

Hope this Spring has found you hatching lots of chicks. But now that you have all of these chicks, what are you going to do with all of them? You pick out the best to keep for your own personal stock, you might sell a few to neighbors for their own flocks but that still leaves you with lots of extra chicks. Maybe this Spring gave you baby bunnies, goat kids or maybe even an extra calf or two. Maybe you have eating eggs or hatching eggs to sell. How about some pieces of old farm equipment, a small tractor, harrow or what have you. Maybe you have fresh fruits and vegetables or maybe plants and trees. What are you going to do? Bring them on down to Farm Swaps. Great exposure, lots of parking, lots of potential buyers. Runs the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month from around 9am till around 2pm There is some shade. We do suggest sellers bring a canopy or umbrella during the summer months. These are farm swaps only so we ask that there are no flea market or garage sale items. Tell your neighbors, tell your friends, heck we don’t care if you tell your enemies. Meet us for a beautiful day of chatting, buying, selling or swapping your farm related wares. No Fees!
