FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Hello from South Florida! I brought home 4 Blue Wyandotte chicks on Friday and so far so good. I am definitely a hovering hen - the chicks are doing well but I will be happy when they get some size to them! They will be in their run/coop when grown, I have foxes, hawks, raccoons, who knows what else, but the hawks are bad enough so the girls will not be running around the barn and pastures. I lost my sweet Silkie hen to a hawk and will never ever let my chickens run free again. I also had a Rhode Island Red Rooster who was free range but I had to lock him up when people came over (including family!) because he was an attack rooster. He would take naps in my lap. I am looking forward to a lot of joy with my new chicks and am happy to have learned about this Florida thread where I can learn, learn, learn! I have a husband who tolerates all of my animals, a 14 year old daughter who is in love with the little peepers, 3 horses, two dogs, 6 cats, an African Grey parrot, gold fish and a gecko. I also work full time. I am a farmer at heart and hope some day to be able to retire and broaden to more farm yard animals, vegetable gardens and as my mom always said "pottering around the yard".

Ah, another Wyandotte fan! Perhaps we'll end up taking over the state ...

although I'll have to admit to having about a dozen Silkies because they are "incubators disguised as featherdusters." For hawks, eagles, and owls I have PVC and wire tractors. Those tractors are in electric netting enclosure because of the bears. Hardware cloth is your friend (while poultry wire tends to be useless except as overhead protection, then you have to worry about it rusting).
