FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Hi fellow Floridians,

I have a 4 week old Light Brown Leghorn from Ideal Poultry that apears to be a roo in the making. I only want hens in my backyard flock so I would like to find him a nice home. I posted him under the "for sale forum" section for 5.00! He is very healthy and growing fast. He's a pic.....please let me know if anyone is interested. Thank you!

Oooh, ChickenLickin8, I just LOVE Brown Leghorn roosters! They are so handsome, so brilliantly colored, shiny metalic gold, copper, violet, & green, with that big proud upstanding comb. I had one named Stetson (for his big headgear) that was the boss of his flock for several years here. I hope you find him a good home.

And Sarasangermano, don't let lack of a mechanical plucker keep you from processing your own chickens. I find that plucking is the easiest part of the job, and wouldn't need a machine for that unless I were doing 50 birds at one time.

They start needing temps at 95 degrees..... It gets decreased by 5 degrees per week. . . .

Depending on how many you have and how much they can bundle together . . . .
AND Depending on how insulated your coop is . . . . . You could do it now OR You may have to wait a few more weeks.

We have 6 chicks plus an older hen (got her last year). She has been free range and roosted on our front porch. But the last 2 nights as stayed in the coop. She freaked out the first time we tried to keep her in there. Then we put a ramp up to the nest box and she was fine. The coop is made of chicken wire. We closed in the area beneath our dds' old unused tree house. During the winter we will enclose it. But for now it is all open.

My group of 5 four week old chicks are outside in a closed in coop and I still provide them a heat lamp at night on 40 and 50 degree nights. On 60 degree nights, I turn it off.
The babies need protection from drafts too. So, use some carboard as a QUICK fix and close them in an area where they can get out of the wind - - - Day or night.

My group of 11 six week old chicks do not need the heat on 50 degree nights, but do use it on 40 degree nights.

My group of 8 nine week old chicks do not need any heat on 40 or 50 degree nights.

We don't pluck at all - - - we skin them. We like to cook and eat our chicken skinless anyways. The only reason to "PLUCK" is if you absolutely want to keep the skin. . . .

There are some good You tube videos on how to skin a chicken, IF you don't have someone in your area to show you the technique. It is quicker and cleaner than plucking.
